Maybe it's so they can say "It was rated at 22mpg on the highway BEFORE the PCM update"? Just a thought....

I think it's in response to GM announcing the Duramax for 2011 is rated at 397HP after Ford initially announced the 390HP for the 6.7. According to a GM spokesman I heard, they made no changes to the engine, they just had more confidence in it.

Its good PR that Ford is offering a free reflash. Must be a hell of a reflash as they say it takes 30 minutes to update. Me thinks GM is going to have a hard time outpowering this new 6.7l with their current 6.6l using only tuning.(And still meeting emission requirements)

Putting the 6.7-liter Power StrokeŽ Back on Top with a Power Upgrade

This is a rather interesting story on The Ford Story website. To give you the teaser:

Current 2011 Ford F-Series Super DutyŽ diesel owners can get the increased performance through a free dealer-installed software upgrade to the truck’s powertrain control module.

That was a VERY VERY clever marketing move by Ford. You knew Chevy was going to have the chance to outdo Fords numbers because it cam out so soon. Ford baited the hook and Chevy swallowed it whole. I can't wait to get my program update. I will have had my truck about 2 months by then so it should be a real good time to tell the difference. I've already towed my 5th wheel a couple times, now I'm looking forward to a Labor Day trip into the mountains.

It might only take 30 seconds to re-flash, but 29 1/2 minutes to get through typical dealership crud. But I'll leave my truck overnight to get the new flash.

The other rumor out there is the DuraMax is tapped out at 397 due to engine block considerations. Mine will go in as soon as the reflash is available. Has anyone heard if the new SYNC upgrades are in this upgrade?

Doubt it. The power war is in the diesel world. At least in the truck world it is.

I'm not all surprised that an update on the newer trucks takes 30 minutes. Matt was telling me that it takes a long time to upload a tune to the 6.4 trucks and I would imagine that there is even more to update with the 6.7.

Not only was it a very clever marketing maneuver by Ford, but it also sets an interesting precedent. Makes me wonder if the "big three" will start swapping that best-in-class title by releasing these computer updates on an increasing basis.

Threads merged. I have a really good feeling about the 6.7 - I think Ford did the right thing making it in-house.
