New guy needs some help with cam phaser. Already searched.

I've searched and searched, but haven't found a real answer.

Can the cam phasers wear out so badly that they can cause the motor to cease running at all?

I have a 2004 F150 with the 5.4 and it has just under 240,000km. Oil changed every 4,000-ish kms.

But after replacing almost everything it would seem. It vibrates violently. Barely keeps idle. Actually, it idles then dies.
A friend of mine got all the codes and went to a Ford mechanic. The mechanic said it was the cam phasers causing the issue. Codes were mostly related to misfires. I can't remember which exactly. Nor do I have access to a scanner right now.

So far. All I've read is that the cam phasers will only ever make that hideous ticking -diesel-like sound. Not actually prevent the truck from running...
And from what I've read. The cost of parts seems to be sweet dick all down there in the states.
Each one of my phasers cost me $340... ford quoted me almost $3000 if I take it to them and have it fixed. I simply don't have that kind of money for this stupid ****ty truck anymore. And unfortunately I don't have money or time to get another truck either. Because this is always breaking down.

I'm not one to make these sort of emergency posts but I'm at my wits end. I have been able to work in almost THREE weeks. (Work is about 50km's away. No bus route, and I can't take $100 cabs rides one way to work)

So I'm desperately in need of your help!

Thanks,
Adam

I agree with bridge. I know you don't have the scanner now but if you can get one and post the codes we can help quite a bit actually but we need more to go on.

Hang in there man and we will do what we can to help.

I'll have a scanner tomorrow.

If this helps.
Just before this happened. Both cam sensors took a dump. So we replaced both cam sensors. And almost immediately after that things went from bad to worse, to where it is now.

The VST solenoids haven't been replaced. But apparently they didn't need to.
At the mechanics recommendations. I bought all four timing guides, both tensioners, both timing chains, and both cam phasers...

Good deal. It will also help if you tell us everything you've replaced (outside of what you've already listed).

In all honesty it's a shorter list of things I haven't replaced.
I'm going to have to go through all the receipts.

Off the top of my head things that have been replaced.
That stupid fuel control module thing about the spare tire.
Throttle body.
Cam sensors.
Routine maintenance. oil, filter, air filter, plugs, etc.

And then about $10,000 of parts that don't relate to starting the truck.

Alright well now we have something to work with. Once you get those codes we should be able to help more.

What kind of driving do you do on a routine basis?

Any mods to the truck we should be aware of?

I usually only drive to work and back. It's about 80-100km in one day.. And it's about 90% highway.
About 240,000km on it now. Give or take a couple thou.

No mods. Strictly a work truck.
I've actually taken better care of this truck than any other vehicle I've had. Oddly happens to be the worst, lol.

Had it since Dec 03.

Sorry I didn't get any codes. But I learned that these cam phasers CAN keep the truck from running. Upon pulling the pass side off. It came off in TWO pieces. And it was also so far off timing it's ridiculous.

And of course Ford gave me one wrong timing guide. So I can't can't get to work for at least another day.....

We bought a used 2008 Ford 150 King's Ranch without a owner's manual. The salesman gave us a owner's manual for a regular Ford 150, would the payload and weight ratings be the same? We want to buy a truck camper and are not sure how much weight we can put in this truck.

Well you should of started another thread for this but they would be about the same. There may be a slight difference but if you go by those numbers then you will be good.

Here is my pass side phaser...

And my upper timing guide on the pass side in in 5 pieces...

So yeah, cam phasers can end up so bad they can stop the motor...

Are you replacing both phasers? Make sure the seals on the tensioners are good.

Both phasers HAD to be replaced.
Bought new tensioners as they were pooched.
Bought new timing chains and ALL the guides....

The cam phasers were so bad they essentially destroyed all the timing parts. One guide was in 5 pieces. Another was almost worn right through to the mounting bolt....

So $1500 in parts later...

Ah ok so the chains ate into the guides and tensioners? Phasers can't cause that but yours are definitely fubar. More pics of the carnage would be nice.
