93' F350 Rear Pinion Nut torque?

Yeah I think I might have made more work for myself. But anyhow I never checked the torque on the rear pinion nut before I replaced the seal and I was wondering if there was a torque spec for it? Im not 100% on the type axle I have, but I can tell you its a 1993 7.3 auto with 8 bolt lugs and the rear diff cover has 12 bolts to hold it on.

Thanks guys.

You got the full-float Sterling axle, IIRC the pinion nut torque is about 150 lb-ft or so.

My FSM said 160 ft-lbs minimum, but you have to set the rotating torque...

how to do all that on the truck...

Oh yeah, i was told to check the breather tube for the axle for any blockages. is that the hose that is attached on the driveside axle tube on the same metal block for the brake lines? how do i check it, blow air with my mouth or a air hose?

Yep, that's the vent hose, should also have a little breather-thing at its top end - pull the breather off the hose and see if you can blow some air through with your mouth, but pull the axle oil fill plug first cause if you don't then the air you're pushing through the hose has nowhere to go and you won't be able to feel if there is resistance (plugged line) or free flow (all clear).

One should never over tighten then back off a pinion nut ... If you over tighten it, leave it or replace the crush collar.

Ultimately you should put a mark between the pinion and nut, remove nut, yoke, seal, replace seal, yoke, nut and tighten to aligned marks ...

-Enjoy

Yeah I know! What I did was leave the nut where I tightened it the first time, ***** punched it so I knew where it was and then put the torque wranech on it to see if it would go any further at 150lbs. It did, about 1/16th of a turn. I may have lucked out.

Anyway what sucks now is i already filled the diff and i gotta remove the plug... time to make another mess! If I can blow through it, can I blow air through it with a hose to un block it?

You should be able to remove the hose from the nipple, use a vacuum and a pick to clear the nipple, if the hose is plugged - replace!

No need to drain or get filth inside the housing.

-Enjoy
