Exclamation Suspension or leaf Springs for Clearance?

Hey everyone.

I have a e99' PSD as you can see in my pic. I am currently running 34" 315-75-R16's on my truck:

My truck has the 3" suspension leveling kit on it. When Im cranked all the way to the left, the tire will rub a little bit. When I am turned all the way to the right it only rubs if I hit a bump while completely turned.

I would like to eventually get 18" wheels with 35" 315-75-R16's. I want to make sure I have the clearance for these and I am not sure what my options are. I know I could spend money on a suspension lift. But I have heard of adding leaf springs or getting a new leaf spring set to allow enough clearance. There is always a body lift option but that is just a bad idea in general.

Any suggestions and links on leafs springs or suspension lifts?

Thanks!

If the tire is rubbing the springs (which is probably true) then a body lift will not help any.

If you want more height then you probably need new springs since you already have the 3" add a leaf.

Thanks. I have 160k on the truck and I'm almost positive these are the original leaf springs. Sooo... Getting brand new ones would get me the clearance for my tires now and the 35" tires in the future? Any info on where to get them and how much. Should I go OEM or aftermarket ? etc....

The backspacing on the rims is what is causing you to rub on the springs. Go with less backspacing and the rubbing goes away.

So like 285's? or 305's? Sorry if I am guessing at the wrong number here. How much should I change the backspacing to allow the 35's ?

But even if I got a new set of rims, my tires would still be 315 wide. Sooo... They'd still rub correct? Please tell me what I have to do to keep them from rubbing even if I put on 35" tires and 18" Wheels. what would the specs on the tires and wheels have to be?

If you get less backspacing then your going to rub on your fenders. I have 20" wheels with 35s and a 3" leveling kit. My wheels dont have much backspacing and they rub on the fender inside and out. But you can cutt the inside fender out to cure the inner rub but you'll still be stuck with a rub an the metal fender wich can ruin your fender and cutt your tires. IMO I would get an aftermarkef lift, thats what I wish I would have done, and prob will do in the future. Goodluck.

Also if you go with a lift you can get the backspacing that you want to achieve the look you want rather than havin to get a specific backspace, plus you dont want to have to custom order wheels.

What do you mean by backspacing?! ha ha. Is there any way to have 18" wheels, and 35" tires on a 3" suspension leveling kit without rubbing?

The more backspace the wheel has the further in it will sit in your fender. The less if has the further out it will sit and look alot wider.

If you want 35s with the 3" kit get a wheel with backspace to match around what the stock wheels backspace are and cutt the inner fender out. But if you drive rough road you could still run into rubbing issues.

Ok. That makes sense. Looks like I'll get less backspacing when I get new wheels and tires. So there is just one question left. Is it possible to get the correct amount of backspacing with 18" wheels and 35" tires and still have clearance with the 3" suspension leveling kit?

You should be able to get whatever backspacing you want on an 18" wheel. What that is exactly I dont know, like I said I would try to get close to stock but it may vary an inch or two either way hard to say. I still believe your going to have rubbing issuses the same as I do, mine dont rub that much seein how I cutt out the inner fender which I would recommend if your capable.

Thats not a bad idea. I'll probably cut it back then place some other kind of protection in there.

A 4 inch lift will clear with the factory back spacing which is 4.5 as far as fender's rubbing, left and right can be corrected by welding more on the bump stop's, it stops it from hitting the leaf spring. 3.5 back spacing will do the same thing. even if you lift it 6 inches with out adjusting bump stops it will touch leaf springs if flexed enough, thats with big tire's.
