About a week or two ago my Bronco randomly started acting as if I swapped in a 3 Cylinder Geo engine. It has no power at all and even when floored struggles to get up to 30MPH. After about a minute and a half it'll finally hit 30 after my flooring. It also refuses to shift unless I take my foot off the gas. I took a look at my carb but it seems to be alright. This problem is making me incredibly mad, the truck has no go. It just wont get out of its own way and the problem started completely randomly. I was going to school one day and all of a sudden it started and just got worse and worse.
You might consider checking your exhaust system. A lot of times, a clogged catalytic converter will create that problem. Since your engine must have an open exhaust, it can't make power with a restruicted exhaust flow. Your transmission will not shift also because you have the accelerator florred. Try checking it out and let us know.
Well, you might think about checking out your timing chain. I recently drove mine across country and ran into a similar problem. It turned out that i actually had 2 problems. The first being that the idiot first owner of the truck replaced the engine and didn't align the timing marks on the crank and cam. The second problem that created the "no power" problem was that my timing chain had "stretched" and wore out. Once I replaced the chain and correctly aligned the timing marks, it runs like a dream! I know you probably hate the idea of doing that, but it might be the problem. I can't think of anything else that would create that problem. Let me know what you find.
I've figured it out a little more. It's not the fact that it has no power (Although it seems that way). It seems to not be shifting at all. If I pump the gas it'll shift and act fairly normal except for a really hard shift. I need to pump the gas once to get it to shift up or down. Plus, it idles incredibly low while in D, like around 500RPM, it gets close to dying. I'm thinking it's a vacuum hose
If you have a factory carb, you don't have an E4OD. It's an electronic automatic, and is controlled by the EFI computer. Check here. The E4OD can also be identified by the electrical connector on each side of the pan and the O/D kill button either on the dash ('87-?91) or on the end of the shift lever (?92-96).
On my 89 there isn't a o/d kill its an actual drive selection on the transmission, next to it is regular d. My guess would be to check spark plugs and wires. Maybe you could look at the fuel filter or fuel pump, there could be a clog in the line (it could happen). Have you checked you transmission fluid lately? Thats just my guess.
