Towing a fifth wheel 14K and need more power
O.K. maybee not more power, but I have plenty of questions about towing an extra 14K. But before I go there. Would I benefit greater by going to 4:10 or 4:56 gears? I currently have 3:73 gears and an Edge Evo Proggramer. I set er at 60 hp tune and do about 45 mph up the Baker grade (between vegas and Victorville) in second gear by the time we reach the peak. I have heard thats good and thats bad. I don't know. John Wood can hook me up with a DP tuner but wondering at this point if the money would be better spent on new diff gears?

60RatRod, I have the same truck and with the dp tune by john woods, I went to the live tune but my trans blow, in 40 tow the only thing that slows me down is the egt. I still have stock exhaust w/cat. I also have 60 tow but was concerned about egt. It will get to 1100 f going up that grade so I backed down to 52mph and the egt droped to just under 1000f. Call jody so he has you in the computor, I am still waiting for james to call me on the latest updates because he couldn't find me in his computor.I have to take mine off for smog check. I tow a 30 weekend warrior fully loaded and am looking for a 38 foot toy hauler instead. Another note, dp's 40 tune is like most other 100. His 80 e is just great plus you have the no start and others. The drive thur if you can get it thur is alsome to. John can hook you up he's great, I got his trans too, but the latest updates come from jody and he has to have you in there. Good luck

Not to change the subject, How hard was it to change the front end to 06. Do you have to change the hood? and what was the cost for parts, lights etc., I have a friend there in las vegas if parts are cheaper I like your front end and would really consider doing mine, takes Chet
Thanks Dan
Also, no you don't need to change the hood.

re-gearing will make a night and day difference.
im running 315/70r16 (suppose to be 35" but only measure a true 33") and w/ 3.73 i was in second on that same grade.
i now have 4.30's and it tows much better. @ 60mph in 3rd im @ 2500rpm (where i make the most power). and 2500 rpm in OD is 75mph.
if i can keep 75mph i can pull that grade. but with people going slow (and the retarted CA 55mph speed limit for towing) i usually end up clicking into 3rd and pull it 55-60.
i had my truck dyno'd and my power band was around 2300-2500. so my 4.30's were perfect for the speed and gears i wanted to be in.
i did loose a few mpg, as now im spinning @ a higher rpm per any given speed, but it tows like a raped ape.
this is all towing a 6300 lb jeep and trailer.

You will definitely benefit from a re-gear. I have been seriously considering it myself. Here is a good source to figure out where you want to be
Randy's Ring & Pinion. RPM Calculator.
Our 3rd gear ratio is 1.0, Overdrive is .71 so don't use the top calculator.
I'll soon be running Nitto Dura Grappler Highway Terrain in a 285/75/17. Nitto says it is 33.8". According to the calulator my rpm's in OD with 4.30 gears, will be:
65 = 1973
70 = 2124
75 = 2276

You can send Bill (PHP) your Edge Evo and he can upgrade it Power Hungry Performance - Upgrades .
*Call Bill to see if he knows a little about Edge I'll PM you so this thread doesn't get sideways. Tuner stuff is the fastest way to ruin a thread.

60RatRod, Thank you, I've been gone. I have stock 235 tires on my dually 4x4 cc lb 7.3psd. My gear ratio 4.10 . It pulles real good with dp tuner. Just the egt thing with the stock exhaut to be changed after smog next month. I was told by john woods that a walker muffer wood do the same thing as 4 inch exhaut but am not sure. The front clip looks great.

I'll second, third, fourth, etc that suggestion.
There is no substitute for the right gear ratio.
You can do more with less hp and the right gearing than 400 hp and the wrong gears.
I'm geared a little too low with 4.88's on my F550, but hills are certainly no problem.
Even with stock tune I don't have to shift down unless it's a 5% grade pulling my 13.5k 5th wheel.
2500 rpm = 70 mph in OD.

Ok, I know everyone says if you have 4wd you have the change the gears in both axles. But really this is only true if you are driving with 4wd engaged, right? I mean, if I change the rear gears and dont engage 4wd until I can drop the money to have the front gears changed out, there would be no harm done, right?
