Bought my 1st motorcycle, now what?

So yesterday I drove up to lees and bought a motorcycle. This is my 1st bike, and it needs a lot of help? Think it is a 82 honda ascot FT500

Was wondering if any one knew a good forum, on line parts dealer, or any just any thing to help out.

This is what I see wrong right now

broken wires
modified wires
broken lens
missing seat (lee thinks he can find it)
missing key
battery
front brakes don't clamp no brake fluid
rear brakes wont release
jumped power to stater just "donk" like some thing is stuck
tires dry rotted
forks leaked oil
sure there will be more.

P.S. If ford made bikes I would have one!

Starter just went "Donk"?

There's a sound that just inspires confidence....

No offense man - I'd have a hard time keeping a straight face if I heard that. No vehicle should ever go "donk".

maybe "clunk" is a better word its the sound of starter drive engaging the fly wheel but not turning.

it could still be a bad starter

Those ate the starter if it backfired while trying to start.

You may have an expensive hobby ahead of you with this or any non-runner.... I almost bought one of these when they were new.

Good luck with it:

honda-ascot : Ascot FT500 Enthusiasts Group

Motorcycle Buyers Guide - Honda FT500 Ascot, VF500FT

Ron Flory's Little Red Honda FT500 Ascot

Thumper Stuff - FT500 Parts and Prices

If it's eaten the cam, you should reassess....

Hey, a bike that no car will pull out in front of!

Sorry, had to say that.
I gave up riding bikes when I topped a hill and found a sherriff's car coming at me, in my lane, about 90 MPH, passing a long line of cars. No shoulders to this road, and the ditches were 5 FT deep, and ~2" away from the edge of the pavement.
Somehow, there was (just) enough room for the truck he was passing, him, and my 1100 special between those 2 ditches. I went back a few days later, and decided that I had to have been rolling on that 2x4 that was laying on the side of the road.
I still have no idea how I kept from dumping it, when his door mirror took off the rear signal.......

Buy a good insurance policy. Lots of poor drivers who never look at the other cars/trucks and hit motors with impunity. I stopped riding years ago simply because most other drivers on the road are too distracted to bother to watch out for motorcycles or bicycles.

Or car/trucks/semis. Heck, I've even seen trees that just jumped out in front of someone.......

When I met that deputy on the hill, I happened to be in no particular hurry, and was riding 15 MPH below the posted limit. Had I been riding closer to the legal limit, I have serious doubts that it would have turned out well. Mom always said, never drive/ride faster than your guardian angel can fly............

Did you get a title to that basket case?? (Sorry, that's not a motorcycle, anymore.)

It's been a long time since I messed with motorcycles, but, you're gonna need a very full bank account and a LOT of time to get that 'scooter' back into good condition.

IF you don't have a 'clean' title, cut your losses and get rid of that scooter.

Ok the engine turns over, starter not working think that was the problem that they were trying to fix before.

I do have the title, I still owe a little money to PO, but have to much pride to as for money back.
