Just wondering what type of mpg others are seeing with a V8 in an Explorer... I've had an 03 for almost three years and consistently get 21 mpg hwy while on roadtrips. The speeds are generally 70-75 mph which IMO makes the mileage even that much more impressive. The overhead LOM will read 22-22.5 mpg but the actual hand calculated is 21 mpg.
I can get 21-22 with my '02 if not bucking a head wind. I usually don't drive over 70 mph and dump the cruise control when climbing a hill that would kick it out of OD.
Apparently Stumpman also has a wife who goes like hell to the next red light so she can stomp on the brakes before it turns green. But then so do most drivers around here. Mine also drives me nuts by continually pressing and releasing the accelerator rather than keeping a constant setting.

I can only remember driving with one woman who did NOT drive like that.
When we first got out Mountaineer its was getting about 17 to 18 for my wife going back and forth to work. Then is went to 14 to 15. On the last trip we took it on a year ago it got about 21mpg. But now it only gets driven around town as we take her car on trips now. I dont know why all of the sudden my mpg dropped. I have replaced the plugs, wire and even added a cold air intake. It still only get 14 to 15. It runs great, so I dont know why it dropped so much. Any ideas????
You sure it didn't drop after adding the CAI? Typically those seem to include oiled air filters and that oil can coat the Mass Air Flow (MAF) elements. In the early stages that will lead to no concerns other than a drop in fuel economy. If left longer you may get hard starts, misfires, etc. I'd suggest you try cleaning the MAF sensor with CRC MAF Sensor cleaner or electrical parts cleaner.
I average 18 to and from work (country driving stop every 2 miles or so), 22 on the hi-way. I also notice my in dash system is spot on, most it has ever been off is .5 gallons in a tank most of the time with in .2 gallons or less per tank.

No. It was all ready getting the bad gas mileage. Thats why I added the CAI in hopes to gain some mpg. I should clean the MAF. I have owed this Mountaineer for 3 years now and I have never cleaned it. It starts and runs flawlessly, it just get bad gas mileage.
