Transmission Swap 4R100 to 5R110

I have a 2002 F250 w/7.3L. I just got back from a 500 mile trip with a 12000 lb camper, and i need less of a down shift from 4th to 3rd. Is it possible to convert the truck to have a 5R110 trans with tow/haul and the extra gears? Is it possible to just switch the internals or are they totally different? Thanks for the input.

no... It is not.

What speed are you towing at that you cant find a gear to match?

RPM's are your friend...FYI

I just seem like the downshift from high gear is from lugging to screaming. Driving an 03 duallie 6.0 of my fathers seemed to shift nicer with a gear in between, better towing. Obviously it is a different truck, probably gear ratio difference, but was hoping to change the difference between gears.

You would need an entire different computer to run the 5R110. It would be much cheaper to get BTS to rebuild your tranny, then add a good tuner to control the shifts and power. If you're dead set on changing RPM's between gears, look at an over / under drive unit from US Gear or Gearvendors.

I think the space between 3-4 on the 4R100 and the 4-5 on the 5R110 is about the same but the 2-3 on the 4R100 is a different story

This is one of those things that a lot of people talk about but nobody actually does. Check out this thread . Note what Dennis from ITP Diesel has to say about it in post #6. Doesn't sound promising.

4r100 gear ratios:
1st - 2.71
2nd - 1.54
3rd - 1.0
4th - .71

5r110 gear ratios:
1st - 3.11
2nd - 2.2
3rd - 1.54
4th - 1.0
5th - .71

So swapping from a 4r100 to a 5r110 will do absolutely nothing to change the downshift RPM's out of top gear. Basically 2nd, 3rd and 4th gears in the 4r100 are identical ratios to 3rd, 4th, and 5th in the 5r110.

Tow mode

In the 5r110 it is really a 6 speed. The truck normally skips 4th from 3rd to 5th gear in to 6th gear. 4th gear is what called a cold gear. I just wanted to add that.

With tow haul it allows the torque converter to lock in lower gears and delays shifting up.

Get a tuner and you can optimize the shifts andyou can increase pressure in your 5r110
