I'm getting ready to do the same gap adjustment. Mine is at about .048-.050 right now, so I expect I may even be completely removing the shim altogether, but will wait to see if I need to grind it down or eliminate it based upon the internal clearances when I get it open.
One question... Could a low system voltage (11.7-11.9 volts) cause this same kind of intermittent behaviour? I know my alternator is going out and have a replacement on order, but I need to adjust the gap regardless.
The cheap low pressure gauges are useless except to see if there is any refrigerant in it. It needs a real gauge set put on it to check pressures.
Well that cheap gauge helped me determine that the system was full, on the low side I'm assuming but those gauges you speak of are a nice addition to anybody's workshop, Harbor Freight has a nice set if it wasn't mentioned.. I hooked it up to the low pressure side, I believe to be right on the top of that aluminum canister I'm assuming is the condenser. While having the truck on at idle and fan on high cool, as the clutch was engaging the gauge needle never went out of the green mark saying it was OK, charged system. What got me is that plug that has a 4 prong in it male to female on that one line running to the back of the compressor, its on a aluminum looking hard line and when I popped it off then pressed it back on flush, meaning applied more downward pressure and it snapped in from those tabs on the side, the air seemed to be back to normal. Could it have wiggled from the vibrations and it wasn't getting a flush connection, I don't know but it seemed to work. Not sure if I said it yet but nice writeup Pop, real nice, you made it real simple to understand.
SON OF A @#$%#@#@@$. I knew i should have logged in to this site first before acting on it. Mine was doing this very thing along with a faulty alternator, 180k, figured it was time to replace some stuff. You mean to tell me i could have gotten away with a $10 fix instead of the BIG $$$ i just paid to fix ac? DOH!! The guys on here are the best as they have helped me out several times before on stuff an auto mechanic will not take the time to troubleshoot, but i was being spoiled and didnt want to suffer in this southwest la/southeast tx heat. Lesson learned, never act on anything until checking with FTE first.
don't sweat it. i paid $$ to have my a/c done at the dealer when I first got the truck. since then I have had to do the "POP mod" and heater cut off valve and about a year ago it developed a slow leak.
as of right now, I am just going to replace the whole damn thing. With the help of a friend, I will get it done for ~1k. where i live, you just cannot drive around without a/c.
