89 e350 leaf springs

A friend of mine told me that my 89 E350 (old U-Haul truck) was "dog tailing". The back end is out of line with the front end.

I crawled underneath the truck and inspected the rear axle and leaf springs. No broken U bolts. I measured from the front eye bolt on the spring to the axle on both sides and the measurements were the same.

Only thing I noticed was that the thick steel straps around the springs were broken off on the right side rear (both sides) and the front straps were bent outward. On the left side one side of strap was broken off on in the rear and the in the front.

I know virtually nothing about leaf springs but it would seem to me that the straps are there to keep the springs straight, hence keep the rear end from drifting side to side. If they are broken seems to me the truck wouldn't sit straight on top of the axle.

Right? Wrong? Suggestions and comments appreciated.

Sounds like time to seek professional help (not for you, for your E350). The least that can happen is you'll wear out your tires funny. Doesn't sound too stable the way it is now. Be sure to get an alignment after the springs are repaired.
