John- Your truck is wired wrong. Brake lights are supposed to light any time the pedal is depressed, key on or off. All my vehicles here turn the brake lights on with the key off-

78 E100
81 AMC Eagle
81 Courier
89 Subaru GL
88 F350

It's a safety feature.

Jared, You might better recheck, 4 ways will flash under any condition, turns & brakes have to have ign. sw. on to operate. I just went out and checked my Taurus, brakes work on the later model, turns still have to have sw. on.

Jeff, Your issue is at the front of the truck, shouldn't take much trouble shooting with a circuit tester to figure it out.

Where are you, maybe a reader close by might give you a hand.

Hi John in Creedmore NC from John in Four Oaks NC

Brake lights and flashers will work in any vehicle without the key in, unless the wiring has been tampered with.

Turn signals on most cars and trucks (including these) only work with the key on, but there is constant power for the brake lights. I have verified this, with the help of my dog. He likes to curl up on the driver's side floor when I leave him in the truck, and I usually come back to find my brake lights on.

My '68 also has power to the brake light circuit all time, key on or off. So did my '72...

Since you have turns the bulb is working. Sounds to me like the issue is at the brake switch.

John
Where do I find the brake switch at??

Darren, Welcome to and the Bumpside Forum.

The factory location would be at the top rear of the master cylinder.

My '69 F100 requires the ignition to be on for the turn signals to work but doesn't require the ignition to be on to illuminate the brake lights.

My ignition also doesn't have to be on for the emergency flashers to work.

....I can't press the brake pedal AND take a picture of the brake lights at the same time but, I can take a photo of the ' 3rd brake light' that comes on (simultaneously with the brake lights) when I step on the brake pedal. This is with the brake pedal depressed and the ignition off.

The brake light switch on my '69 F100 is located on a bracket on the side of the brake pedal.

He may have been drinking and wandered into the wrong forum by accident.

It's a three (3) to five (5) year old thread dredged up, his first post, and profile says he has a 1986 Aerostar. Not sure where the brake switch is on that.

WELCOME to FTE!

Ah. We're back to old threads being revived. Didn't notice the post date further up. --generally when you see a post, you tend to think it's being made in the current times and not an old thread.

....maybe current thread dates should be color coded in green while old thread dates should be coded in red (?). With this, it would immediately be obvious what is a current thread and what is old.

I didn't notice right away either. Jowilker (John) was on the ball and responded right away.

I didnt notice until you mentioned it. DOH!!!
Welcome to FTE Darren, what are you working on? If in fact it is a bump, your brake light swith will be in the interior, under your brake pedal at or near the master cylinder rod. Some have a braket that holds the switch, some use the shoulder bolt that atatches The MC rod to the brake pedal.
My spelling is atrocious today, forgive me.

If it is a 86 Aerostar the brake switch is right where the brake booster rod connects to the brake pedal. AIRC you have to pivot the switch 45 degrees down to remove. Work opposite to re-install.
