Nav update

Got a letter wanting to sell me the NavTeq update for my wife's '08 nav system for $199--any better deals out there?

I have seen this on a torrent site. I have also heard it doesn't do much. Not worth it IMO.

Updates to these systems are released on a schedule, not when there are major changes which are few other than local. And even the latest are often out of date for major changes.

Different system, but I purchased the UK/Ireland chip for my Garmin GPS a couple of months ago for a trip we just completed. (Don't try to drive there without one, it's hard enough on the wrong side of the road and car!) Even the May 2010 update failed to show the M6 out of Dublin to Galway all the way. Same with the M8 to Cork. This is like missing major sections of the Pennsylvania Turnpike and wanting to route you onto US30 thru the mountains.

"Helen" (yeah, she has a name) had us in the middle of pastures for miles on end with bizarre course corrections. To be fair, these roads have only been open a couple of months but staying on them cut hours off the road times.

Anyone driving overseas is strongly urged to get the local chip regardless of the last paragraph. If anyone is going to the UK or Ireland let me know, I've no further use for the chip. It's for the Garmin line, though, not the built in nav system.

I upgraded to 8P and think it is crap. I wanted to have the most update database possible for a family road trip Wichita, KS - Park City, UT - Mount Rushmore, SD - back home. I couldn't have been more disapointed. I had my garmin nuvi along for the ride as well, at least until Park City where it was stolen out of my truck, but that is a whole different story. Anyway, the Garmin would route much better (similar to the route google would recommend) but the expy nav system would take a much longer route. On the leg from Park city to Mount Rushmore, Garmin and google both said 10.5 hours, but Expy said 15 hours. However, that is more a problem with the Expy system regardless of map rev, but many times on the route (we followed Google) the Expy would say there was "no map data, proceed with caution." Even with the latest map set, the Expy was woefully lacking. Don't waist your money upgrading, it still probably won't help. Just my two cents...

I am glad I didn't spend $2000 on the nav unit. My cell phone and Garmin work great.

I still think aftermarket units are the way to go.
