transfer case trouble

My transfer case is leaking where the front driveshaft connects to the yoke? piece that connects to the transfer case, I would also like to note it is starting to get progressively worse and that I can grab the front drive shaft and move the entire piece that connects into the tranfer case up and down ( no its not the u joints moving) I thought it was a bad front seal but now that I can move the whole piece that cant be good? whats wrong and how can I fix it, I will be doing this project myself

sounds like a bad input shaft bearing, best to pull the sucker all the way apart. pm me your email. i have lots, did this when my shift range fork lost its teeth and died.

holy cow that looks complicated, so is there anyway to replace the part I need to without removing the xfercase from the transmission? from the pictures you sent me it looks like it is possible? also would like to say thank you very much for those, they will seriously come in handy

What transfer case is it ??

It could just be a loose yoke nut, regardless it's eaten the seal now.

I'd pull the transfer case to work on it. The drive shafts come off quick as does any shift linkages/wires After that it's just 6 bolts to pull it off. They're not too horrible weight wise really (my NP205 is a different story.. don't think I'd want to lift that over my head)

Pulling it will take less time than all the extra time spent farting around you'll do trying to do it under the truck.

yikes and sorry guys I forgot to add that is a 1356 borg warer transfer case, could you explain what a yoke nut is and what it does, last I can remember it looks like there are a bunch of torx bolts all the way around the case are those what would need to be removed?

you will have to drop the front driveline to see it, kind of like the yoke nut on the diffs. I sent you all 1356 stuff so you are good there. the t50 torx bolts are to pull it in half after it is out, dont touch those unless you have it out of the truck. the bolts that need removed will be towards the front of the transfer case(truck orientation...closest to engine and trans), they will be post trans adapter/pre transfer case, six of them. That will drop the transfer case. For your seal replacement, drop the driveline, pull off the yoke nut and pull the yoke, pry out the seal carefully with very gentle movements, do not damage the surfaces of the transfer case housing, they are expensive. Pull the seal, replace the seal with new, replace yoke, replace yoke nut. torque specs will be in the info i sent to you.

The drive line hooks to a yoke, the yoke goes over the transfer case output shaft, the nut that holds the yoke to the output shaft.

Remove the drive line, look at the end of the yoke still attached to the TC, you'll see the nut.

If you can move the yoke sideways, I am going to say one of the bearings is going bad.

If that is the case, the new seal will be leaking in a very short time.

Parts, NAPA, Advance Auto, Autozone or most of the other parts houses.

I would check to see if one of your local parts places have them in stock or can get them fast if you need the truck soon when you tear it down.

I also say drop the case before you open it up.

okay so I need to buy a front transfer case seal, input shaft bearing and I should be good? I'm pretty nervous to tackle this, seems like it could be complicated for me, if I had to use the 4x4 tonight could it break anything? it would be for about 5 minutes max

my god powerstroker,so much for our low miles counting for anything uh? lmao.
im telling ya,trucks left to sit rather than being used takes a lot to bring 'em back to doesn't it.
brakes rust up,rotors can't take the heat, pistons in calipers and seals like this dry up etc.etc.
aw well.keep at it,and we'll be looking sharp and back to just routine maintenance in a few years haha.
good learning though.

edit,
oh hey.grab two quarts of tranny fluid to fill her back up while your out.
