ticking noise at higher rpms

i have a 2000 ford f150 4x4 with a 5.4L and awile back it started making a ticking noise at higher rpms like when i take off in first gear it does it right before it shifts into second and it also does it when it kicks down as i go to pass a car or move into they other lane. when i have it in first gear at about 23 to 30 mph is does it REALLY bad and its at around 3400 to like 4500 rpm it sounds like a ticking time bomb under my hood! just wondering if i could get some feed back maybe this has happened to someone elese before. thanks guys!!

i'd check your spark plugs...make sure they are all snug. might have one loosening up getting ready to shoot out...if not that, then you might have a small exhaust leak that has to have higher RPMs to get "heard"...
