For a pretty crappy set of headers I am impressed with the gains. Although I can't say this was a true back to back test because tonight was cooler and I actually got to do some tuning with the fuel pressure, needless to say we picked up a ton of power and torque.

Peak power of the night was 276whp and peak torque is now up to 389# I found about half of those gains just messing with the fuel pressure regulator and finding a happy spot with pressure. We are STILL lean on the top end (14.5:1 A/F) and I bet with some more fuel this pig would put down 300hp and 400#tq to the ground. Keep in mind folks, this is almost blower territory power and we are still on a stock speed density computer and 87 octane gas!

I will post a bunch of graphs when I am back in town, just thought I'd share some good news before I cut out.

Bo

Good to hear! Those are some significant gains. It would be great if you could get the AFR's down around 13.0:1...that's where you should make the most power. Were you able to get those graphs up yet? What model of the hedman headers did you go with? I'm looking at the 89510's...

I thought the only Hedman that would fit the efi 460 as the 89510. I really like these HP numbers. What I am curious about now is what are the Gas MPG numbers. Wondering if they stay the same or get better as you have now made the motor run that more efficiently.

So the list of mods so far as I read is the following
k&N air filter in stock box
air horns cut out
Hedman Headers 89510
test pipe for cat
flowmaster muffler and system.
Adjustable AFR regulator set at ??? - (adjusted on dyno for best power)
Ported heads with bigger valves.

oh yeah how much would you charge to do a set of heads to these specs?

Hey Bo, are you still out there?

Do you have any idea want the RPM range could be with these heads? I've only seen ported EFI heads ran with factory EFI. It seems to be restricted, either by the ECU or the intake, to about 4K-4.5K. If I was able to spin the motor to 5.5K-6K would these heads support it? I'm asking because Price Motorsports just released an adapter to put a carb intake on EFI heads. This opens the door to a whole new world of possibilities for our trucks.

If you are going to swap over the intake over to carb why not swap over to non-efi heads? Seems like it would be much more bang for the buck than keeping the choked up smoggers.

I will swap the heads eventually but when I do it will be for a set of worked over aftermarket aluminum pieces. I'm building this truck in stages. In my final stage I was going to rip off the factory stuff and go with aftermarket EFI and heads. If I can go ahead and do the EFI now, in the first stage, I can spread the cash outlay out, save me the hassle of dicking with the factory SD and have more time to dail in the setup.

I can simulate Bo's porting, buy new valves, and have a local machine shop install new seats for a lot less than the 2 grand the new pieces will cost. Plus, in a few years when I do get around to swapping heads I should be able to get back the money I put into the stockers. Just look at everybody that was asking Bo if he'd work on their heads.

I need to know if ported stockers can move enough air for a 460 (or maybe a 521) spinning at 5500 RPM. I know they won't be optimal, I just need to know if they can do it.

great post and story, look forward to seeing more info on this 460. i think i've reached the max on my factory fuel pump, i was wondering if i were to use a fuel pump out of a lighting if it would help out or if it has the same rating. i aslo have swapped out my fuel injectors for 24# Venom's they seemed to help out alot. and by adding the BBK FP regulator seems like it would be a waste since the factory pump is only rated for so much p.s.i . The mods i've done to my 460 are the headman headders, 3" back to flowmasters dumped at axle, Venom injectors, MSD 6A blaster coil and 8.5 custom cut wires, BBK twin 61mm, dual K&N filters, Troyer Performance underdrive pullies, Flex Fan, Comp cams computer controlled cam, Scorpion Roller Rockers. with all these mods i was seening around 11mpg the best ever was 13 following a truck to laredo, tx. now its around 8 mpg after the lift and tires. i would like to find out what type of power i'm making but i want to do the head work first if its reasonable in price. i look forward to seeing what the cost of the machine work and valves cost. thanks

I have no way to substantiate this claim, but I seem to remember reading somewhere that the stock fuel pumps will handle from 350-400 HP.

digging this thread up from the grave
very interesting and with quite a few 460 owners out there trying to get more power, its a great read.
Any more updates to anyones progress.
my only question is WHY are any of you talking about stock fuel pumps. a walbro 255hp will be plenty of fuel, and cost probably the same. id never replace a stock pump, with another stock pump, expecially when i know I want it to make more power later on.

Im sure the stock efi intake will rev to 5500-6000, its similar to the edelbrock performer intake. Im positive that more plenum volume is nessisary on the stock setup, but tricky because the bolt pattern is not a standard setup. Maybe ill draw it up in cad so that i can waterjet a 1" spacer or two.

Someone should get a spare intake to cut apart and make a bigger badder intake out of it....
