51 Ford clutch and trans questions

Hi All, This is a great site and I have learned a great deal already. I did a fair amount of searching and although the answers may exist, i am at a loss to find them here. So forgive my NOOB questions and help this new F100 Owner get set strait.

I have the 239 Flathead with the 4 speed (non-synched).The clutch is certainly tired, maybe even out of adjustment (I need a manual), regarless of my technique double clutching and changing gears is not working! Yes, I drive standard, in fact I drove a race car for a time (but I digress). So my plan is to first buy a manual, then change the clutch. Adjustment and new parts may help, but I live in a hilly area and double clutching, is not something I get all revved up about, no pun intended. My investigation reads I should buy the 10" clutch replacement from NAPA pn# NNC MU721661. With any luck the pressure plate will be good or need a light resurfacing, if cracked etc I will replace.

My main question is I found a 3 speed with the markings below, can I install this in place of the 4 speed? It came out of a 53 F100 with a flat head. I researched into the night and studied the V8BOB guide and am no closer to knowing whether I can swap the 2 tranny's. Please any help is appreciated and some measure of sarcasm is expected.

For the record, I know the 51 ford to be as delivered from the factory i.e. orginal engine (239 Flatty) and trans(4 speed non-synched 1st = granny gear). I know the 53 Ford Transmission to be a 3 speed with all helical gears and 2-3 gear syncroed.

Numbers on the case 1A-7006-A 39R:1
Numbers on the output end TAA is above 7049D G 7N
Numbers on the input end TAAA7050A
RCP0834

Thanks in advance, Jared

Your truck doesn't have a column shift system, so that 3-sp trans won't do you any good. Is your truck an F-2? I would expect if you have the crossmember for a big old 4-sp, you could easily sliide in an SROD or SMOD 4-sp w/ OD from a '80's Ford F-150, with the obvious OD benefit as well as synchro's.

PS -- with the 4-sp spur gear trans, I believe you always got an 11" clutch, so I would measure before ordering. If you go with a different trans, I'd have the flywheel re-drilled for a 10".

From the clutch standpoint, yes. However, you've got a lot of work to do if you use this trans. It's set up for column shift - and you have a 4 spd which has to be floor shift. You'll need the column lever, tube linkage, etc, etc.

Or rig up an aftermarket shifter that goes from the floor to the shift arms on the side.

I'd look for a floor shift 4 spd synchro from a flathead truck, or a 3 spd HD which was synchro'd and floor shift - or a 3 spd light duty from cars/pickups from 1939-50 which were floor shifted. For any of these you'll need the rear collar mount to bolt on the back of the trans.

Thanks guys for the input. I'll replace the clutch first and see if I can get a better feel for double clutching.

You could probably start off in second gear if you are on the flat & level. then you wouldn't need to double clutch. I don't remember if second gear is low enough but someone who owns one and operates it like that should be able to verify this. To start in second from a dead stop will require a good clutch.

Sorry, one more follow up question:

Will a 4 speed from 53 Ford truck (6 cyl) bolt up to my 51 V8 Flathead. The seller relates it is synchroed tranny with a granny gear. I would just hate to separate the engine and transmission twice if I can help it. Once for clutch replacement and again for a tranny swap.

I have procured a Service manual, I wish it was a bit more descriptive.

Again, thanks for your input

If the 6-cyl is an OHV 215 or 223, I kinda doubt it will drop in, but you could pretty quickly check it out with a tape, a mike, and a good eyeball. You'd want to keep the clutch, bellhousing, and "hogshead" from your 4-sp, and just bolt up the actual new trans to that. Check spline count, input shaft and pilot shaft diameter, rear mounts, etc.
