Steering Wheel Question

I have the leather wrapped steering wheel, I beleive, and it appears that something has happend to the leather at about the 11 o'clock point and now the texture is kind of rough. kind of like the paint on it has shifted or something. Kind of hard to explain. But do you think that the surface of the steering wheel is covered under the bumper to bumper warranty? Mine is about up and I was just looking for an opinion before I took it in. I wasn't sure if it was a wear item or something. I really don't want to add a cover to it, I don't really like them.

Thanks.

Scott,
I say try it, you got nothing to lose. I dont see anything in the warranty guide that lists what normal wear and tear to upholstery is so..... If the steering wheel is defective it should be covered.

I finally took it to the dealer. They told me it is a wear item and if they sent the claim to ford it would get rejected. I might try the dealer where I bought it to get their opinion. I have put a lot of miles on other cars and have never had a steering wheel get messed up. I guess I might just end up with a cover, which I don't really like the idea of. Wonder what a new steering wheel costs.

Mine did the same thing at 25K miles. The coating on the leather is very thin. I have never seen a leather steering wheel wear that fast.

I would fight with them on it. Tell them it's not reasonable for the wheel to wear in this fashion after 30K miles.

I have seen something on the Super Duty forum about the leather wrapped steering wheels actually delaminating and there is a TSB on how to fix it. I would recommend searching the Super Duty forum first to see if you can find the conditions to see if the symptoms match yours. I would also check all the TSB's to see if there is a fix that Ford knows about. I believe if you came armed with that information they really can't dispute fixing the problem for you under warranty.

I finally got around to taking my expy to the dealer where I bought it to ask about the wheel. The service manager took a picture of the wheel took a picture and told me he was going to send it to Ford to see what they said. I just got word back from the dealer and ford approved a replacement steering wheel. I think the other dealer was just blowing me off. It appears that I will be taking my expy there from now on for any warranty problems.

The moral of the story is if you don't like the answer you hear from one dealer, it might be worth while to try another one.
