Louie's FlareSide Remodel

So this July I have A LOT of spare time. I decided to redo the interrior, add a off road bumper, rhino line my bed, rack, and tool box.

The carpet was starting to become a very big problem. It was wet, stinky, sandy, and stained. After my drivers side window got smashed in, rain will get in some how even after I covered it.

During sping break I was cut off by a drunk fool that ran a red light and I suffured minimal damage by getting my bumper twisted up. He had a f'ed up drivers door. I liked my bumper, it was nice and shiny. Now that i have accses to a welder I've got some metal to make a ranch hand pre runner type bumper. Its going to have a winch, front recciver, and about 6 lights around it.

Next on my list is to get my bed, tool box, and rack rhino lined. The rack got the rust bug pretty bad only after 3 years, the tool box had some paint chipping on top where the sun is the strongest. I usually have a bed liner but Some sticky epoxy ruined the liner.

Can some one tell me what grits of sand paper to use?

There will be alot more pictures and more little things I will fix up.

man, looks like you have those same snaps around your bed as i have.......still have the cover ?

i love these old flaresides, cant wait to see your progress!

im assuming your asking about grits of sandpaper for scuffing up in prep for the liner? i would think some 400 would be about right

That is the one thing I wish I could find. I remember seeing the cover on when my grandpa owned the truck but after the years until I got it the cover was lost. I've asked him about it and all I get is " what cover?" Lol. The cover would look really nice on my truck .

You could DA or jitter bug sand it w/ 320 & a red scuff pad. Then prime the bare metal w/ rustolem spray cans & coat it.

I ended up sanding with 400 and 600 grit, I didnt know that there was like rubber pads around the cab floor. You can see them cracked in the pics. I just scuffed them pretty bad to have a rough surface for the paint and coating to attached to. The weather has been ugly. with on and off showers through the day. I'll be coating it tomorrow!

First coat of white

Next was a coat of grey

Last coat of red

I'm letting it dry overnight and tomorrow it should be nice and redy for the final coat

Those rubber pads are sound deadener from the factory. When you roll on the bedliner material, take the first coat up to the pads to try to even it up. The second coat cover everything and it should look more uniform. Other option is to chip or the pads w/ a putty knive & hammer to coat the whole thing. I've used urethane calk to fill/smooth out the cracks in the pads before, it seems to hold up well.

Its going to be the bed and the cab floor. Yeah I'm just going to leave the rubber coating in the cab. I hated vacuming for hours trying to get sand and mud out and at the end there still was some left over. So having the bed coating in the cab will make in a very eas clean up.

well this is a sad update. it started to rain so I'm gunna wait till the weather gets better, I dont feel like being high as a kite in my truck lol

Whats the point of the white, gray, and red paint if your going to do the whole floor in bedliner? You have to scuff it for it to stick good.

IMO You should be removing everything inside when doing that. Looks like your going to have overspray on alot of things since you spray painted.

The bedliner is not going to stick to the sound deadening to good.

It said to prime the surface with a priming paint. The colors were completely random. I just used what ever My grandpa and I had left over from previous projects. I just used the paints to apply extra coats. I could not remove the seatbelts at all. When ever i tried to turn them it would just (cant think of the word) smooth out the wrench and hole. So I just had my brother hold them up while I painted. It probably wont stick to well but I did scuff it out pretty bad, most of it will be under the seats anyway. My main concerns would be where you put your feet.
