I took the oil pan off my motor today and found a broke rod, the few cylinders I could see had some minor scratches in them. I was going to try the rebuild myself, but after calling around to find parts I found a motor shop that told me he would rebuild my motor for $1500 (contract no more no less) He is going to do it all. New pistons, boaring, head work, cam, and crank. Which would basically be a new motor. It sounds like a good deal to me, but I wanted some help from the pros....... FTE!
Thanks for any help!
I'm not a pro, just an enthusiast, but that's not a bad price (in fact a pretty good price) IF he knows what he his doing (with Y-blocks) and that price includes the parts. Going rate around here is about $2,000 including parts. A full rebuild kit runs about $800-1000 depending on where you buy.
Tend to prefer rebuilding if I know the engine history. Found most of the pro shops I dealt with offer a 90 day warranty. I would be interested how far the block will have to be bored to clean the cylinder walls; not sure if I would rebuild if at the outer limits. Had a 70 Torino 302 in 65 F100 and had the engine rebuilt by pro. $$$$$. Then, at around 15k, the cylinder wall cracked due to operator error. The shop would have had to sleeve the cylinder, something I was not excited about, so out of desperation I went on ebay and searched for a seller with good to excellant feedback, and who offered a warranty. Ended up purchasing a rebuilt long block; delivered, w/out an exchange, for $1500. Also stipulated the max bore I wanted, and cylinders were not to be sleeved. Athough the seller offers a 7yrs, or 70k mi' warranty not sure what it would take to void the contract particularly since I installed the engine. Anyhow, this was around 5 yrs ago and the engine is still running strong. Suspect a 292 will run a few hundred more.
