How to: Clean the IAC Valve on the 5.4L Triton
#46
Good info & process to repair.
Thanks for posting this. Been wanting to repair for some time but don't like hanging out over the fender of my F-250 SD. Guess I need to dig a hole to drive it in for under the hood work.. Anyway, I've been stopped numerous times with the foghorn going off under the hood. A little acceleration usually made it stop but it still bothered me. Then I ran upon your thread and "Voila"
That took care of the problem. My valve was a little different but same process.

Worked like a champ!
I have to say this post was the perfect fix for me. The only trouble I had was the lack of room to manuever since this part is up against the firewall on my 2001 F-150. The 'work around' for me was the purchase of an 8mm racheting end wrench. It did the trick. And the truck idles perfectly. Thank you for the great post!

Patience is key on this. I am a big guy too with big hands, but I was able to work through it. I changed mine, still having idle issues though. It's going in Thursday for exhaust manifold bolts, so I will have the shop look at it. I am out of clues on why it won't idle right. Tried new IAC, cleaned the MAF, not sure what else it could be.

This may sound stupid as i thought but on Fords Mod engins the problem could very well be the PCV valve. They need replace after about 75000 miles to keep the idle down. An old Ford service manager gave me this tip after i had replace the IAC valve to no avail
good luck

I have recently acquired a 1997 F250 LD (same body as the 150)the exhaust system is screwed(currently rebuilding it due to some IDIOT trying to cut out the cats with a grinder and cutoff wheel) and it won't idle (runs alright with a little finessing of the throttle) but after I get the exhaust rebuilt to where the O2 sensors get the proper flow I was going to clean the IAC valve but was wondering if the exhaust not feeding right would cause idle issues a well.
put things in a nutshell...the truck would run but will not idle. IAC Probs, Exhaust Probs, or combination of both??

Saved me $$$
Know this is an old post, but wanted to add that I just took my 2000 Expedition out of storage for my daughter to use. Local mechanic told me he "thought" the rough idle was due to a vacuum leak with an engine gasket and gave me an estimate over $1000. After reading your posts, as a quick fix, I added Sea Foam in the gas tank. Within a day it was 90% better at idle. Big Thanks
