I stand corrected. Kober's auto salvage was located on Montana Road in Washington TSHP NJ, off RTE 57 and according to the almighty internet closed in July 2000.
Living in Mt Olive, I drove by W.A.S. a couple of weeks ago on my way to Washington to find the RhinoLining dealer and they looked like they were still in buisiness.
Maybe it was Kober's who the EPA shutdown. Their close date is pretty close to your timeline Tom.

I always went to this place when I was younger, Groffs Junkyard in Port Republic. The Father always kept the old cars, but he passed years ago & the son owns it now.

Kober's is long gone... I used to get parts for my 1969XL convertible out there back in the mid and late 80's. Kober's was on the side of a mountain so anytime it rained, the water would flow through Kober's and down the roads and into the ground 'way down there' creating a slimey, goey, multi-colored mess. After a heavy storm, about 1/3 of Kobers would be submerged. Typically the '20's and 30's' section.
At some point the EPA walked in and fined them, and due to them not solving the problem and not paying the fine, they were shut down and the whole area escavated out. I have no idea what's there now.
If there's another junkyard out there let me know, Washington NJ isn't that far from me. Maybe an hour or thereabouts. Truck-yards are hard to find.
