Gas Shooting Out of Carb

Ok, guys here is the situation...I have '78 F100 Custom, with a 351W (I put it in) C6 transmission....I removed the stock intake and Holley Carb and swapped them out with a New intake (Edelbrock 2181) and a New Carb (Edelbrock 1406). I have been waiting on some parts to come in, they finally came in yesterday, so I installed them, and attempted to start the truck just a minute ago. Truck fired, ran rough, figured I needed to adjust the idle mixtures, etc...got out to adjust the screws, truck began to "chug" like it was choking out, as I reached under the hood to give it some gas via the throttle linkage, it died, and as it did, it SHOT GAS OUT OF THE TOP of the carb, from both rear jets (ports)...cleaned it up, tried to start it again, same thing...so what would cause it do this? I really need to get it back on the road, because my in-laws are finally moving out of my house after a year, and I would love to help move their stuff in my truck...suggestions? Recommendations? FIXES? The shots were about 8" in height...almost to the rear of the hood in the raised position...then the carb appeared to "steam"....I have a 3/8 hose as the fuel line as per the instructions provided...there isn't a fuel filter, but I could install one if need be...any other information can be provided upon request.

Thanks

Sounds like the float is stuck. If it's a new carb, I'd be giving whomever I bought it from a call.
And you should really have a filter, it's very possible some trash has gotten into the carb keeping the needle and seat from sealing.

Anyway to "unstick" it...or does it sound like it needs to be rebuilt? I purchased from a small shop close to me...it was pulled and running fine per the mechanic...so it is used, but looks to be in like new condition...the shop said a guy was downgrading his son's bronco to a 2BBL to keep him in control...

Send it back, you shouldn't have to jack with any new out of the box product. I just bought the same carb from Jegs, it was dumping fuel out the return spring likage on the test drive. pulled it and sent it back, had a new one three days later, no questions.

Try tapping on the carb with something like a wrench around where your float is....sometimes that'll solve a stuck float.....

X2 on the tapping. Just do it gently at the fuel inlet. Don't get carried away with a 4 lb sledge hammer!
Don't be suprised if it doesn't work, 50/50 chance. If it doesn't work you'll need to pull the air horn (top) off the carb. I'm not real familiar with the Edelbrock carb. but a rebuild is probably in your near future.

I called around this afternoon, and found a rebuild kit...would it be worthwhile to spend $40 and rebuild it...I could do it tomorrow afternoon...returning it is a no go...I purchased it used, from a local mechanic...tapping it sounds fine, but does it sound as if it is in need of a rebuild?

If it's stuck, it's stuck because there is varnish or debris that is making it stick. Tapping it can free it and get you back on the road, but it won't solve the problem permanently.

I would rebuild it. Make sure you use a fuel filter after the rebuild.
