When you go to look at a used manual transmission, what do you check for? Should it shift into all gears w/o the clutch(if it's out of the truck)? Thanks.
Just the trans, or is it still bolted to an engine?
I always like to spin the input/output shafts, and shift thru all gears, listening/feeling for anything that doesn't seem right. If it's loose, flipping it on a side and getting the drain and fill plugs out to look for signs of metal shavings (within reason) is another thing I like to do, as well as a small sample of the lube.
Those checks can reveal quite a bit about the likely condition of the internals.
If it has a removable plate/shift tower, opening it up and having a peak inside can also tell a lot.
