I was thinking that could be a possibility. Usually they have oil in them when they are bad. Here is a good pic of the engine labeled: labeledtopview1a.jpg picture by galexander - Photobucket

So how do I know if the ICP is bad? I'm gonna pull it out in the next hour or so.

If you see oil in it you need to replace it. It might not be the problem but it's leaking. Also, unplug the icp and then start the truck and see if it makes a difference.

If you have a meter I would also suggest ohming out the male 9 pin at the valve cover. Here are the ohm range you should see:

G - G - I - I - C - I - I - G - G

G = glow plug
I = Injector return
C = Injector common feed

You should measure .5 - 2 ohms between G and ground, and around 3.5-5 ohms between I and C.

If you have never had the valve covers off I would recommend pulling them and doing the 50 cent mod or replace the wiring harness. This is going to be preventative maintenance if nothing else. Also, check your torque on these:

Glow plugs: 124 inch pounds or 14NM
Valve cover bolts: 97 inch pounds or 11NM
Injector hold down bolts: 120 inch pounds or 14nm
rocker arm pedestal bolts to 20 ft-lbs

What is the wiring harness called? And where do you buy one?

It is just called a valve cover harness. You can get them at ford or international. I wouldn't buy an aftermarket one.

I just unplugged my ICP this PM and it is covered in oil. I don't know enough about these things and how they should run to know if it's not running right, what are some of the symptons?
And incidentally people should be careful when they unplug it as there's a purple boot in there. Mine fell down in the valley and I had a hell of a time finding it. Just a heads up.
Should you spray some contact cleaner in and on the plug before you put a new one in there.
Any special tricks to putting in a new one.

I would start a new thread. Don't want to even though the info may be relevant.

Well I pulled the the plug and the only change I got was the SES came back on. I'll go ahead and try pulling it out today. I am trying to do this in between taking care of my two youngest Grandsons (1.5 yrs and 3 months). So I only get about 10 minutes at a time to do anything. I love having them around but I will sure be glad when their Mom and Dad are back from their vacation.

I'll keep picking away at this, please keep the suggestions coming.

Was able to get codes. They were:
P1280
P0113
P0380

Baby's screaming see ya later.

The 1280 was probably caused from unplugging the icp sensor.

P0113 Intake Air Temperature Circuit High Input

P0380 Glow Plug Circuit Error Circuit A

Do you have a gpcm? Have you messed with the air temp sensor?

I have a feeling that the 1280 might actually be the problem. It said something about low voltage.

What is the gpcm? Is that the glow plug rely on the top of the engine?
if so The answer is... I don't know. I do not have two relays up there like it shows in the picture.
