i thought my back tank was only errr 14 gallons or so! its 18? i've only put 160 miles since i filled up last! that puts me UNDER 10 MPG!!!!!!!!!!!!! i can't afford this truck! im gonna buy a festiva if it remains this way! can someone help me? i got a lil check engine light flashing so im assuming something is a bit wrong with it. i dont think my timing is that far off! someone PLEASE HELP ME!
i've changed oil filter, air filters, fuel filters, and sparkplugs.... still not good mileage! i wanna cry!
A non mass-air V-8 with a 3 speed? I am sorry to say that you will not be winning any awards for driving an environmentally friendly vehicle anytime soon. The only thing i can suggest is, try advancing your timing to the extent that it will not knock at all on 87 octane gas (start with 36 degrees total advance); look into a taller (numerically lower rear end gearing); maybe go one or two sizes taller on your tires. Give your engine a complete tune up...new plug wires, new o2 sensor (that should help out alot!).
i heard something about a timing lite or timing chain? something about my timing? im gonna get one of those. they're like $5 from what i've heard. what do i need?
I would say the first thing I would do is pull the codes to see why the check engine light is on. Go to www.broncodata.com under tech to see how and the definitions for the codes.
I have an 88 XLT Lariat with 4.9, AOD, 3.55 gears, short bed and I get 20 MPG highway and around 17 city driving. I have driven 340+ miles on just the rear tank without a problem. I have never tried to see how far I can go before it looses suction though.
A timing light is not a part that would be installed on your truck. It is a tool used to check & set ignition timing. Fastf150 has a good idea. Try to find a friend with a timing light that you can use. Get him/her to help.
As mentioned above, have it scanned for codes. Better yet, go spend $30 on a scanner and learn how to use it. It's really pretty easy I'm betting the 02 sensor might be showing it's age, might as well look into changing that. Could be a clogged catalytic converter, but that may point to other problems
BTW, how many miles on your truck. My 95 302 had 230,000 miles on it as of December. It was getting around 5-8 miles per gallon. It was just slap worn out. I put a lower mileage H.O. Mustang engine, rebuilt trans and new exhaust in and now it get's 14-15.
Don't spend a DIME on a scanner: get a Haynes manual and read here. All you need is a paperclip to pull the codes. Buy a timing light, a compression tester, and a fuel pressure tester from Sears, and get a MityVac to check your engine's vacuum at idle. Also, read the sticker in the engine compartment with the vacuum diagram for the proper tune-up procedure.
