The engine technology is there.
I drove a 2.0 intercooled turbo diesel Mondeo last month for a couple thousand miles in Britain. Plenty of power -- surprised me. Diesel was cheaper than gasoline, but still about $8/gallon! The computer told me 46mpg overall and 58mph in cruise control at 75mph on the M5. "760 miles to empty" was neat to see on the dashboard!
