ok guys newbie here again lol. I am having a issue starting my truck. it will not turn over, but when I hook the jump box it s no starts no issue. I am thinking the battery is bad but I also think it might be the starter or starter senloid. my truck was changed to 12v but I don't know what all the previous owner changed and didn't. help me figured this out plz what should of been changed for this to work? what should I look for? this will help once I figure out if its that starter or battery. I think battery cause the truck ran fine before we built the new altenator mount. but now not so much.

 

well, if it works fine hooking it directly to the jumpers, the starter motor is good. The solenoid would have to be 12V for the low amp switch to kick in. Solenoids are cheap compared to battery. If you have a battery tester, throw it on and see what it looks like under a load, but my guess is it's the solenoid.
If swapping the solenoid still doesn't work I'd say either starter button or ignition switch. make sure everything has a good ground too while you are at it.

You could test the existing solenoid to see if it works or not.
Take the battery and starter leads off, hook up a multimeter set on resistance to the two posts. Use your starter button and you should read 0 ohms or a very low number. If it is still reading infinitely, try running a jumper lead to the relay post and see if that makes a difference (then that would be either a starter button or ignition switch).
I none of that works, a new 12V solenoid will get you fixed up then.
Knowing how to use a multimeter and some basic wiring knowledge will go a long way in troubleshooting problems. These trucks had pretty basic wiring, but old frayed wires and corroded grounds make for a lot of problems.

 

awsome thanks i will try that this evening. also do you know why, when i run my head lights they constantly dim. the previous owner said everything was switched from 6v to 12v. but i am under the impression that if they didnt switch that that it would blow the head lights. i thought i might of been the way the alternator was mounted (rigged). so i built a good bracket and longer belt to stop it from slipping and missing. still the headlights dim back and fourth.
