460 4X4 73-79 trucks?

Sorry, You're mistaken.

J is a 460 in F series.

L is a 534 used in a 700 or heavier.

I bet he thinks the *L* for Michigan Truck Plant is for the engine

460 4X4 73-79 trucks?

The 73-79 4x4s didnt come with 460s a lot of people mistake a 400 for a 460. Just last week I alerted a seller on ebay the 79 truck he was trying to pass off as a rebuilt 460 was a 351M/400 and explained why I could tell. Funny thing the add was gone the next day.

No 460's were offered in a 4x4 Ford, until 1983. Then only in 3/4 tons and 1 ton's.

Warranty issues were supposed to be why they did not come in 4x4's. More horsepower and torque meant, lots more stuff to break and have to fix for free.

gray79f250, I saw the same truck you mentioned, on e-bay and knew the guy was full of it instantly on his claim of it being a 460.

460 4X4 73-79 trucks?

I have seen where a company(Penn railroad?) got their trucks with the 460. Granted this was a special case, and not something that i would have guessed ford would have done for an individaul, however talking with dad and uncles, mostly employed in some way or anouther by manufacturs(MI), if you had the money, and they had the parts, you could special order just about any combinatio0n back in the "good ole days", but they say this "did" start to fade away in the late 70's. Anyhow, If i can locate the document, I'll post it. This was a big topic for us in the past as at the time we had to run a factory available engine. We run pullin trucks.

ford did not factory assemble the 460 4X4's that are out there. not even 1! that being said ford did contract with several conversion companies that made specialty and limited production vehicles like 4X4 vans and the 76 mustang II cobra's (thats right, those are not ford factory built vehicles, they are conversions!) any large order could be put out to bid for conversion and ford may have contracted said vehicles but they never offered 460 4X4's to the public in the 73-79 time frame. hawkrod

Just to agree with the current info, no 460's were installed by Ford in 4x4's in the 70's, no way, no how... however, they are pretty darn easy to swap into a truck. Also, I forget who it was that first said it but alot of people do seem to think 400's and 460's are the same... I dunno why.

Really? That's wild! I might have a hard time telling a 351M from a 400, but there is no way I could mistake a 460!
Maybe the guy I am 'chatting' with is making that mistake...
On the same subject, has anyone seen a stepside 78 4X4 F250 HD?
I know a fella who had one, and has a picture... Just wanted to know how rare they are?
I am trying to get these guys to join this forum so that I don't have to repeat everything here! LOL

You could not get the standard cab and a short bed F250 4x4. There were some few 8 foot step beds.

460 4X4 73-79 trucks?

I know of a guy who has a 460 in his 79 F350 4x4 since it was brand new. He said a small company now out of business did the conversion. He ordered the truck with a 351M, the original engine. Other than the 460, it was also outfitted with running boards, CB, fat tires, graphics. These 70's stuff.

Yes, the pic he sent does appear to be an 8 foot stepside bed.
He also has some cool Jackman wheels on it. I wish I could find some like them!

I never liked the 460, a real gas guzzler and it doesn't pull as well as a 400, good for ultra low end torque, but thats it. The FE stands for Ford Engine, I believe and the M stands for M and thats it, I've heard modified and mustang and maverick, but thats it so far

It may be a little heavy on gas compared to a 300-6, but it is MUCH better on fuel than my 351M 2V! Even in a heavier truck (Supercab vs. regular cab)
My 460 just idles along, and ya don't need to kick it to climb a hill. It will do it in whatever gear you are in.
I also had a 400 in a 74 Mercury, great motor too. I can't pick favorites, because I also love Clevelands!
