parking brake pedal

Hi all,

My parking brake pedal has no tension anymore. Went to apply it a while back and I just about put the pedal through the floor, and it felt like something broke loose. Looking at the parking brake pedal assembly, it looks like a spring that may provide tension is broken. Anyone else had this problem? I am assuming that I will need to replace the in-cab assembly, so where is a good place to pick up a replacement at a decent price?

I would ask Ed, www.partsguyed.com

But first, are you sure it just doesn't need to be adjusted?

Thanks Riffraff. I just had my rear brakes and rotors replaced after this occurred. It was weird when it happened, tons of resistance one time, and you can push it to the floor with 2 fingers ten minutes later.

My parking brake is real mushy, needs to be pushed hard all to floor for it to grab good, i use it all the time. Where are the adjustments and how?
Thanks, Steve

This oughta help. It's just like adjusting drum brakes.

Here's a pic by camodown that shows the e-brake shoes with the rear rotor removed. He was doing axle bearings
and while at it replaced his e-brake shoes.

It isn't uncommon to break a cable, easy to identify and I'd start there.

The tension that pulls the pedal back up is the cable from the parking brake. If the cable breaks, then the pedal will stay at the floor.

Mine broke the button off the cable right at the end of the parking brake pedal. If that is what happened to yours, it means replacing the front section of the parking brake cable.

As mentioned above, contact Ed and he will be able to fix you up with what you need.

I just broke the front cable today (button popped off of the cable)

I purchased a new one to install onto the pedal. Question is, how do I install the cable? Do I have to pull the ECM? How else do I access it? Can you give me some tips onto where it attaches?

My Chiltons was not helpful at all :-(. I am fairly mechanical, so that won't be a problem.

BTW, this is my first post. I have been a lurker on here for quite a while. I just bought my first truck, and I love it.

Thanks,

John

Robin, IOT understand which way to tighten the star wheel adjuster, you need to tell us, is this the right or left rear wheel that is shown here.

Thanks big guy.

First off, Welcome to FTE.

Yes, you do have to remove the PCM to change the front cable. Then you have to pull it down thru the floor from the outside. To get it hooked back up you will need to unhook one side of the cable in the rear where it splits to each side, to get enough slack to get the front section hooked up. Then re-hook rear cable.

Since you are mechanical, you shouldn't have to much trouble, it just takes time and being flexible to get that front cable changed. The important thing is unhooking the rear cable, or you will never get it back together.

If it keeps breaking instead of braking, it could be because your actuator lever (inside the drum) is seized.

The lever can be seen in this image, above that packet of lithium grease.

Yeah, I agree.

Someone bumped a thread (not as old as this one) a week or so ago that had Robin posting help, and it made me smile.
