2003 FORD RANGER FUEL FILL PROBLEM
#5
My 97 Ranger Splash had/has this same issue and it was 2 things:
First, I had the fuel filler neck replaced, and they twisted it just a little bit, where the vent line is kinked and completely collapsed, causing the gas to back up big-time when you fill up.
Second, someone tried to siphon gas out of my tank, and their hose had broken off in my filler neck, almost completely blocking it. It was very frustrating because it had happened while it was sitting overnight in my mechanic's parking lot.
Those are my two suggestions. If you have had any work done that might require dropping the fuel tank, the filler neck was most likely re-installed improperly and the vent line which is INSIDE the filler neck is bent/collapsed.

I have a 2000 Ranger with the exact same problem. I have to squeeze the gas pump handle only about halfway and let it sip the gas, because if I try to run it in with the handle squeezed all the way, the gas back up and the nozzle shuts off. Been that way ever since I've had the truck. I've tried twisting the nozzle every which way, putting all the way in, part way in, and barely in, which seems to work best.

My wifes '03 ranger does this. You can't pump gas into it slowly enough to keep it from blowing back out onto you/truck/ground and turning the pump off, was a swb, now is a stepside, hoses have been changed over, still does it. (I refuse to pump gas in it)
I'd wish somebody would find an answer, before i just start replacing parts at random hoping it will go away(like my f150).

My '03 Ranger was doing the same thing. If none of the hoses are kinked or clogged try replacing the fuel pump. Mine worked perfectly once I replaced that. My best guess is that the pump itself was not venting properly.
