I just got done rebuilding my 360 new rings and bearings and HV oil bump engine back in but now we can't get it started when we do get it to fire and run for about 2 to 5 secs it shouts flame out of the carb and dies any help would be appriecated
If you don’t mind be regressing, this reminds me of when I first started up my CJ after the buildup. It’s in a ’69 Mach1 with a shaker but I had it off along with the hood. Had to crank if for a long time and was worried that I flattened the big cam in it. Well, it finally caught but then a huge fireball flame shot out of the carb. I had some rags handy to shove down the throat but then I noticed one of the trusses in the garage was smoking! Pushed the car back and grabbed the hose to douse it out, what a heart stopper! Moral; try to get your timing as close as possible and don’t fire it up in the garage!
On a first time startup I use a wire down the spark plug hole to find TDC and look at the valves moove before I put the cover on. When the intake valve closes and the piston finishes coming up this is TDC. Point the rotor towards the number 1 spark plug terminal in the cap and put it all together and fire it up. This will leave you plenty of room to advance or retard the timing immediately after you start cranking. Never had one not start soon after the key was hit.
make sure your are at tdc and where ever the rotor button is pointing the number 1 wire is right in front of the rotor button. i had the same problem. just tring to help some may say i dont know nothing though.

Make sure that you are at TDC in the compression stroke of the engine, turn the motor over(by hand) to the desired timing, using the dampner and the degree marks, put a spark plug on #1 wire(ground plug on engine) turn distributor in the direction of rotation until plug sparks, tighten distributor slightly just so it will not turn on its own, but that you can turn it, hook up plug and wire. Turn key and start, and adjust timing as far advanced as you can. Good luck.
