How big is my fuel tank?

Okay. I have filled up 3 times since buying this truck, a short wheel base crew cab Lariat 6.7 diesel. I filled up each time when the lie-o-meter said about 50 miles to empty. I have never been able to put in more than 21.5 gallons to top it off. The owners manual says the midship tank should be 28 gallons. Dealer is clueless and is quoting what is stated in the manual. Am I missing something?? I know another 6.7 owner that has the same question. Please tell me I am stupid, then tell me how big my tank really is. Thanks.

the trucks will always warn you of low fuel level well before you'll actualy run dry..

esp. with a deisel you DONT want to run out of fuel...

my 03 gas truck does the same thing. when i drive around with the needle well below E, i still cant get close to the max rating for fuel...

im just not that interested to actualy drive it till it chokes out, to see what it will take to run it out of gas.

according the specs listed on the website under "home" then 2011 superduty tech specs.....
Fuel = "37.5 gallons (158-inch and 172-inch WB) / 26 gallons"
The dealer told me I had a 24 gallon tank. The guage said I had 80 miles till out of fuel and when I filled up it only took 18 gallons.
Not sure what to make of all of it either....

so, what size bed do you have? what was the mileage on the lie-o-meter?

80miles to go/15mpg +3slop in bottom of tank +18 fill = 26

you must have a shortbed

If you really want to measure.

Drain the tank in your garage.

Then fill it.

Sam,
yes, short bed... didn't even think about tank slop accounting for 3 gal of fuel. The meter was saying that I was getting an average of 20mpg...

I am guessing that I should have a low fuel warning of some sort... any idea at what point it triggers ??

Thanks !

Note that if you try to run the tank to empty, the fuel sensor may trip the PCM to shut down well before you are actually at the end.

yeh.. I arrived at the airport from this weeks trip at 3:30am friday.. and the remaining said 72 miles to go, with 48 to drive.. I was worried about going dry... no stations with diesel open the whole way... so I am sitting in the carport right now with 22 miles to empty. and 8 to the nearest station.. 1 gallon to use and 1 gallon to spare. (lom at 11.7mpg right now).. trying to decide if I take the suburban to fill the tractor jerrycan for 5 gal safety before starting the dually..
(and its time to change the fuel filters too)

Sam

| I filled up this morning, 32.5 gallons, 15 miles to go on the LOM before fill up.. I have the 38 gal tank, and have put in 36 gals once. (usually pointed uphill slightly.. that pump was in use, so the other one (I used) points me downhill slightly..

I filled up last night and took 22 gallons. My 05 6.0 would take up to 27 at times. I think it has to do with the 5 gallon DEF tank taking up some space.

FWIW here's a quote from page 411 of the first printing of 2011 F-250/350/450/550 (f23)Owners Guide, USA (fus)

Fuel tank (mid-ship) 28 gallons (106L)
Fuel tank (plastic) 35 gallons (132L)
Fuel tank (Aft axle) 40 gallons (151L)

Seems an odd way to describe the tanks, two are by location and the other is by the material it's made of.
Perhaps the tank size is related to the bed size.

According to the 2011 Ford Super Duty Diesel Supplement (4th printing) page 62 & 63:

Fuel Tank - Regular cab long bed and all short bed - 28 gallons
Fuel Tank - Long bed (except regular cab) - 37.5 gallons
Fuel Tank - Chassis cab midships - 28 gallons
Fuel Tank - Chassis cab aft of axle - 40 gallons

Actually on page 62, it reads as follows in the table:

Fuel Tank - Regular cab long bed and all short bed - 26 gallons

You have a typo in your post - should read 26 not 28 gallons. So to answer the original question, his short bed 2011 has a 26 gallon tank.
