This is dads 89 F250 with 460 and 5 speed transmission. We were hauling cattle the other day and it started getting noisy and then things went bad. It will catch and go in forward gears with severe gear noise and if it is in reverse it acts as if it is also in a forward gear. We don't have it out yet and have checked with a few local salvage yards, but so far no luck on a replacement. Does anyone know for sure which transmission this is and where to find a good used one or possibly a rebuilt one. Also, is a transmission like this one that has an external clutch cylnder the same as a 5 speed that has the internal clutch cylinder, or is this a different transmission. Thanks for any help.

You need to look for a ZF5 transmission from another 460. They all have the external slave cylinder. The ZF5 trans for the small block had the internal slave cylinder but the bellhousing will not fit your engine.
