Ok, looking to freshen up the excursions suspension soon and have been looking at lift kits. I really like the skyjacker kits because they give you an add a leaf in the rear instead of blocks. I don't want a bunch of axle wrap. My question is, how big do I need to go for 35's and what else would I need to do besides what comes in the kit? I noticed a note on one of the kits talking about driveshaft mods and I don't want to do anything like that. What have you guys installed and found is needed or any issues you have run into?

 

I can only offer my experience, all positive, with my kit, which is not one of your choices. I used the Icon 5" all spring kit because I wanted to avoid axle wrap. I also wanted 35" tires.

Since the install I have not had a problem with vibration and performed no driveshaft modifications. I did go with every option I could, dual front shocks, dual front stabilizers, adjustable pan rod bar, and since I lifted it and added taller tires I had the X re-geared, added LSD, cryo rotors, new pads, and RAS. But other than that, nothing extra.

Good luck with just lifting it. You ain't seen nuthin' yet...

4 inches is the minimum to clear 35s...6 inches is overkill.

I'd also suggest an all spring kit as blocks don't seem to cut the mustard. PROcomp, Donahoe Racing, and a few others make an awesome all spring kit. Mine is a PROcomp kit and I'm very satisfied with it...

Just an FYI, myself and Quietman have been running 35s on the factory mags for years without any issues, just in case the addtional expense of new rims wasn't too appealing.

 

Good point Toreador. Shouldn't rim size be a consideration when deciding on the size of lift?

 

I did a Pro Comp. 4" lift in 315s and could not be happier!!!

 

Exactly what I needed to hear! Thanks guys! Yeah, i'm sure the lift is just the beginning...lol. I'm already looking at the Edge CTS in the future, exhaust, CAI, and tires. I'm sticking with the factory wheels for now. I just got done installing the Pioneer X710BT nav in it and got the rear dvd to power up, but even if I crank the volume to the max, you can barely hear the rear dvd over the speakers. I used the correct wires I believe, but just not much volume from it. Guess i'll look into converting the audio to wireless or something. I'll have to check out that icon 4" also.

 

Icon 5" is what I used, not 4".

I did the 5 inch Rough Country and havent noticed any axle wrap issues. But with that said it comes with antiwrap blocks and shocks as well.

I forgot to mention this, but something you may want to consider is having to regear. There will be a noticable drop in fuel economy and power as soon as you slap those 35s on. I know firsthand...

With 35s, you want to regear to 4.10 to make it easier to get and keep your truck moving; I.e. You'll recover your fuel economy and power. You'll also want to look into a 6.0 transcooler and a shiftkit be it TransGo or sonnax.

 

Yes, I ordered my kit with shocks. Six for the suspension and two for the stabilizer.

And since I already mentioned re-gearing I trust Toreador was agreeing with me. Yes, you will re-gear, or no, you won't like your 35s.

Skip the Transgo they suck. I have had them in my cars before and its better to get a aftermarket valve body that actually increaces fluid flow instead of just fooling the trans and just uping line preasure. Check with Factory tech and see if he has something for the X. I put 37x13.50 R20s on mine and it makes a huge dent in you power and fuel economy. All be it still driveable but you will not be passing anyone unless you have a run at them.
