You're fine.

E99 rigs shouldn't use OAT ELC, but L99 rigs and newer are ok to use an OAT ELC.

OK this is the second time I've checked my coolant. I think I'm doing it correctly but thought I'd ask the experts.

Drained through my drain in the radiator. Filled one test tube and tossed it and filled a second for the test.

I figure I'm around Row 4 and somewhere between B and D. I'm assuming that the green is good.

What do you guys think?

You're obviously OK.

Drawing a beaker of coolant, tossing it, and drawing another for the test is waaaaay over-kill, however.

Open degas bottle cap and using needle-nose, dip strip.

Wait to "develop, read values.

Same result as using the beaker.

I'm always afraid I'll drop it in there I did the test tube flush for a couple of reasons it looked a little wet in the spout been raining and I normally use the tube to test my pool water. O and I'm a little crazy too.

Thanks for confirming I'm reading it right.

I'm getting ready to do this flush and replace my coolant with Rotella ELC. Tough to find this stuff. Only place I found near Seattle that had it in stock was Overlake Oil in Kirkland - a wholesale distributor of Shell products. Nice folks though and decent price at $14.73/gallon for the concentrate. Hope to do the job this weekend.

Finally got around to doing mine last week. Was changing the LPOP as well so I took the fan and radiator out. Glad I did. The truck has almost 300K on it, fluid coming out looked clean but it took me 20 minutes and repeated washes to get clean water(no green residue) coming through the radiator. I would fill it from one end, turn it at different angles to get water to run through different tubes, turn it completely over and go the other way. Each time I thought I had it clean more green tint would come out. No way I would have gotten it all flushing it in the truck. Ah, the adventures of a high milage truck.

Thanks to Gooch, Stewart, Pop and all who have contributed to this thread. Sure made it easier having so much information going in.

If your in the South Atlanta area there's a Kenworth MHC place off 75 south that has Rotella ELC for $14.29/gal.

For others I noticed when I googled them they have locations across the south.

Just managed to get this done yesterday. Stupid little things dragged the project out to 6 hours. Couldn't get the passenger block plug out to save my life - kept breaking 1/4 socket drives. Also hassled with the spring clamps more than I should have before getting the hang of them - that was really just a lack of experience on my part. Finally got to point of putting it back together and realized Ford gave me the wrong lower rad hose and since they were closed for the weekend by then, I had to get a Napa version. Extra parts trip was an hour of the project time. Glad to have it done. Good opportunity to look things over also.

Changed coolant today, as usual not all went well. Biggest issue was when changing thermostat and housing I broke the front bolt. They were all tight and this one I worked back and forth but still snapped it off. Remover belt, alternator and PS pump and was able to drill out and re-tap. Spring clips are a bitch. Replace hoses, thermo and housing. After much searching I found Delo ELC at the International parts store. Kinda a messy but not to bad. I areally appreciate all the posts, made the job not so bad.

water pump / Flush

Just bought a 2000, 7.3. Went though and replaced all the fluids before reading any threads. I replaced the coolant with the Prestone ELC and tap water. (2 gallons ELC, 2 gallon tap water as I did not flush the system, just drained.) Not smart as I read this. 600 miles later, water pump is leaking - totally my fault I'm sure.

My question is this. Should I do a complete backflush to the system with the leaking water pump or fix the water pump first and then do the complete flush? I'll probably convert to the international water pump with the filter too.

Thoughts?

From what I have read and been told, use the old if it still works.

Of course if catastrophic failure you wood use new.

May as well run the trash with old one if ya can.

Flush and replace the pump. Trust me, I know.. Ive made a similar mistake.
The pumps are cheap(ish) to do once. Not so much to do over and over.
