Head and Camshaft Install Pics

I just put a new different head and a new cam in my truck. Took some pics of the process or p&p and install of head and cam. I don't have any of actually taking the old cam out and putting the new cam in. I had them but somehow got deleted off my phone when I synced it to my computer!!!! Just want to put these up here so maybe it will help some other poeple and give some ideas of what you will get into when doing this!

After P&P about 10hrs Later!!

Old Head Found bad valves #4 cylinder

Another Shot

New Head, Decided to put Intake/Exhaust manifolds on while setting on bench. Was pretty easy, until I went to pick it up!! More than I wanted!!

Head On

Fiber Cam gear After I tried getting it off! Broke the Camshaft thrust plate. Had to drive 70miles to get on or wait a week for Ford to get one!

Putting Crank Gear On

Another shot. Had to rig up a way to push the gear on. The Harmonic balencer install kit didn't have the right stuff to do it. Just took a piece of pipe and the old gear and used the parts out of the kit and pushed right on.

Thats all the pics I got. Sorry couldn't put any of the install and removal of the cam! I was so mad when I lost them!

I ended up taking the whole front end of the truck off was much easier than trying to work through the radiator support. But I just replaced the radiator support so it came off easy. Hope these pics help out others that want to do this. If you have any questions about the install feel free to ask! Be more than happy to help!

I believe I would have gone with the all metal gears from the earlier models due to added stress on valve train.

I like the coolant plate on your intake. You might want to think about adding a plate with hose fittings on bottom of intake.

I welded my fittings to prevent leaks. The long pipes are nice to clear ex/intake for tightening/loosening/installation.

I put all metal gears with the cam kit. I had one of those heat plates made up but I have a hairline crack in my intake were they stamped the serial number on the bottom right by that plate. I should have patched that tiny crack and put that plate on but I didn't guess that will be a future project.

This is exactly what I want to do too. I was wondering if it was possible to put the manifolds on a loose head. Thanks for posting and answering that question. Now I need to find a head!

Are you meaning bolt the intake and exhaust manifolds to the head before you install it?

I don't see any reason why not, but you'd better have help when putting it in because it's going to be HEAVY! I'm also wondering if it'd be difficult to get the head to torque right when there's a bunch of weight pulling on one side.

Cherry picker for putting the head into place.
It will torque down just fine. I've seen mechanics do a complete valve job and/or engine rebuild on a 300, and never touch the intake/exhaust bolts. If they ain't leaking before, they shouldn't leak after.......

Help would have been a nice thing!! I picked and put on by myself! More than I wanted! It was alot easier to put the intake and exhaust manifolds on while it was on the bench. It set on the block and never rocked or anything.
