Transmission compatibility questions

So I just got this '73 F-100. Its the factory 302 with the 3 speed auto currently.

Everything leaks so everything is coming out, getting a bath and a "tune-up"

I figured since it was going to be out I might as well put something in that I've always wanted again, and thats the 3 on the tree.

I searched a few different ways but can't seem to find much on people going from auto to 3 speed, and even less on people putting in the column. (its like noone likes it. hahaha)

There is a member that has a column from a '66 for sale, and I'm tempted to jump on it but I don't want to shoot myself in the foot if its not going to work with the transmission(s) that will play nice with the 302, or the chassis.

Just looking to see what everyone elses take on this situation is.

what's great about going to column shift is the simplicity.
Look for a donor truck, although simple in design, gathering
All the parts may take a lot of phone calls and web surfing.

If you really want this set up do it now, you will kick yourself in the butt
Later if you don't.

I wanted to install a PSD in our family Bronco, now I am kicking myself in the butt.

What is a PSD?

I figured I'd make it what an enthusiasts would have made it back then. No air bags or 20's just a fun street truck. Mild cam, LSD, maybe lower it an inch or two and hit some cruise nights with the lady. But ever since I learned to drive on a 3 speed I've sworn I'd get another one.

And I can't think of a cooler parts runner for my shop.

PowerStroke Diesel, and yes, your idea would make a great parts runner.

My first truck was a three on the tree, and this is where my learning how to work on trucks began.

Try to PM NumberDummy, he can help track parts down for you.

Cool! I'll shoot him a message when I get to a real computer.
