loud engine knocking sound is scaring me...

yesterday was the second time in the month I've had this truck ( '94 F-350 7.3IDI) that it has made a loud knocking sound when I started it up. (sounds just like an old 8 cyl wagon with a blown head gasket I once had-that was NOT MY FAULT :-)
The first time I had turned the key, it caught briefly, but when I released the key it stalled. So I immediately turned the key again, it caught, but there were 3 distinct BANGs before it smoothed out. That was about 10 days ago. I checked the oil, it is where it was when I did the oil change- halfway up the hatch markings on the stick. Oil gauge reads 3/4 when the truck has started up.
The second time was 2 days ago-Wednesday- this time there were about 7 bangs before it smoothed out. I had not started it since coming home from church Sunday- don't know if that makes a difference. Still no change in the dipstick. The oil change I did was a Fram filter, with Valvoline blue 15W40 oil for diesels (I can look at the jug if it matters) The oil I drained was ridiculous sludge- I was considering doing another change after 1000 miles, but it's only been about 700 so far.

any suggestions?

Test your glow plugs.

Could be a sticky injector, pull the fuel filter, empty it (in a safe manor), fill it with your favorite Diesel Injector cleaner lubricator, triple the dose in the tanks, let it run for about 45-60 seconds, shut it off and let it set for as long as you can, couple hours at least. See if that helps.

-Enjoy

You could replace the oil filter and cut it open to see if any metal particales have been collected. At least then you could rule out a bearing failure.

What type of sludge.....just black or with green tinge to it. How is the coolant level and color.....

Valvoline Blue and a FRAM.... that's like socks with sandals..... use a good filter Wix, Fleetguard, NAPA etc.

I second the Wix or Fleetgaurd, however if you do Napa get the Napa Gold, it's a Wix wrapped in Napa colors!
