broken tranny dipstick tube reciever (e4od)

the metal tube that goes into the transmission casting is broken. just spent the night with a couple of buddies doing the front seal in the tranny (e4od) and the rear main in the engine (7.3 diesel). all is well with the repairs eccept for when we reassembled everything, the tube got damaged and cracked where it goes into the transmission. how do i fix it? how does it come out?

thanks,
newbee

Should just be a few bolts on the trans that hold the dipstick in.

Just buy a new one, they are quite cheap at ford and make sure you get the seal!

I would think the only bolt holding the dipstick tube would be the one on the bracket that bolts to the engine (which you probably have removed).
The tube should pull straight out once the bracket is free, I would think.

just to be clear, its not the dipstick tube that contains the dipstick. its the short (about 5" long) tube that goes directly into the transmission. i dont see any bolts there.

Got me. Maybe go to wittrans.com and click on E4OD and have a look at the exploded parts diagram and it may help you figure it out.

The E4OD on my 5.8L gasser F350 has a one piece dipstick tube. The end of it goes into the transmission with an o-ring seal. Near the top is an attachment to secure it to the engine block. I'm sure the diesel version may be different.

i know what you mean about the short "extension" piece on the end of the dipstick tube. it just pushes into the transmission and the other long part pushes into that. the little short piece may be stuck in the transmission because it either has one or two o-rings on it and they may be frozen into place making it difficult to remove. mine pulled right out after some twisting to loosen them up
