Your experience with 285/75/16 tires and MPG

My tires will be worn out within the next few thousand miles and I am trying to decide whether to go with a 265/75/16 or go up in diameter to a 285/75/16. My truck is all stock with 4.10 gears and a manual transmission with 235/85/16s. Did you detect a decrease in fuel mileage when switching to 285s or is the low gearing and manual tranmission going to make that irrelevant?

I'm courious, what mileage do you get now with the 235/85/16's ? I have an auto with 235/85/16's and get 20 mpg. Stock except 15k mod and straight thru exhaust.

I didn't notice much difference when I had my 4.10's running 235's and then 285's.

About the same, maybe 1mpg difference.

15.5 in town, 17.5 mixed, 20 highway

I am averaging 17.5 mpg with about 70/30 city/highway. I imagine I will be getting higher MPGs with a Tymar and MBRP exhaust, which will be on the truck in about a month.

I doubt that tire change is enough to change much. Might notice it the long run but each fill up you probably wont notice much. Change to like 315's and you will notice some.

I figured as much. By the way, how do you like the Tymar?

I like it alot. Dale at Tymar is a great guy to deal with, the kit cost more than a 6637 filter but is different in the fact that the filter itself is a Donaldson and waterproof where the 6637 isn't. He also puts a band that goes around the filter so it stands up on your fender instead of just resting on it which i think is better but thats my opinion. I also got the mandrel bent pipe powdercoated black which i think looks really good. All in all its worth it.

Sounds sweet. Did your throttle response/turbo spool/MPGs improve?

It wasn't noticable because i still have the stock exhaust and DP on. So i still have some lag in spooling and throttle response. I get 18mpg but im also lifted 4" and have 265's with 4.10's. However, you will definitely fall in love with the turbo sound after you put it on. Thats a promise!

The DP and a larger exhaust will bring out the turbo-burble. I roll down the window just to hear it. I don't care if it's 20 degrees out, I wanna hear it. The passengers that don't understand can suffer.

Clay at Riff Raff diesel sells a 6637 kit also for a great price. Downpipe and exhaust are a big help also.
