Question Objective Opinions Wanted Bored 400 vs Stroked 351W

Hello All,

I am wanting to build an '84 F-250 4x4 for towing my 66 Galaxies, general work on the farm, daily driving, and road trips (often pulling a trailer). My current truck is a '76 Chevy 1/2 4x4 that I built a 383 stroker for (don't be offended, I inherited it). Anyway, I am wanting to put one of those ZF? 5 speed overdrives in this F-250 and retain the 3.55 gears.

Now, as for the engine: I had NEVER considered building a 400 until I found this forum and discovered their potential. I am convinced, despite popular disbelief, that the 400 can be built into an AWESOME powerplant, especially for use in a truck built for a life as described above. However, as I have always been fond of the Windsors, I just can't decide on whether to build a .030 over 400, or a 4.00" stroked .030 over 351W. My main deciding factors are:
1) torque
2) mileage
3) durability

So, please give as objective of an opinion as y'all can. I greatly appreciate the help.

Thanks,
Nathan

BTW - The F-250 currently has a 300-6, which I WONT keep, and I will not entertain the idea of a 429 or 460 - I would use an FE, but it just wouldn't be right in an '84

It's going to be unpopular here, but a 393W is an easier swap. The stroker kit is reasonably priced. It should fit your trans, get respectable mileage, good low end torque, it's light weight and plenty of parts are available.

I have entertained the same idea with regards to the 400 or 351w. I will be going to a 408w stroker. I have a complete 400, 351m, 351w(efi & carb), 302, 300/6(efi) and 240/6, and did research on all of them.

I decided on a stroked 351w, over the 400, for the following reasons:
- aftermarket support is better
- prices are lower for parts
- parts are easier to find (at least around here)
- EFI already available without adapting a system to the 400
- lighter weight, smaller size
- tranny selection

I looked long and hard at the 400 and there is no doubt that it could do what I wanted. The only thing with it was, I couldn't build it the way I wanted, and include the other and future modifications to the truck.

If your truck already had a 351M/400 in it I would be singing a different tune. Choosing the right parts for the 400 takes time to research properly. The average guy won't take the time.

I have 2 400s going into vehicles that never came with them from the factory. Motor mounts and exhaust selection take some planning.

"You know, that 351w can stroke up to a 427"

435 was the biggest one I remember.

You can also buy a Dart or Motorsport SVO block An SVO block will allow up to 454ci.
