motor swap out

So I have a 2001 F150 sport 4x4 manual 4.6 extended cab truck that I destroyed the motor in (the machinist of 30 years was VERY impressed with the damage that had been done, said I had done a nice job) anyway I found a 1997 crown vic 4.6 police interceptor automatic and am wondering if the change over will work. I called the local Ford dealer ship and they said it would work but would need to find a PCM (Power Control Module) form an automatic crown vic so the truck knows that the new motor is from an auto and not a manual. Does this sound right? Am I heading down the right path with getting a new PCM. Also is there advantage with having the police interceptor motor and what pieces wound I have to keep from the interceptor i.e. intake manifold. Look forward from hearing from the wise. Your 2001 is a PI head engine. The '97 Crown Vic is a non-PI head engine. The dealer is wrong, you DO NOT need a different PCM-the Crown Vic PCM won't even work in your truck anyway. The Crown Vic "Police" engine is no different than the 4.6L used in everything else in '97-there is absolutely no difference whatsoever internally, and it's not a special engine with more power. You can use it, but it is NOT a direct swap-you should use an '01-newer 2V 4.6L with PI heads.

Physically-it will fit.
The intake manifold from your truck will not fit properly on the '97 engine.
You'll give up approx 20hp due to the lower power output from the CV engine.
There are many other little annoyances that will make this swap a PITA.

So pretty much what your saying is, even though the CV motor was free it might be worth avoiding the headache of all the PITA stuff and find an F150 motor.

You can use any '01-up 2V 4.6L. They all have PI heads and will all drop in. You'll just have to swap over all of your exterior dress items from the F150 engine to whatever other model you get it from.
