Foam Under Cowl Panel - 88 F250

I pulled off the cowl panel under my windshield wipers to re-paint it.. Underneath was a foam strip between the panel and the firewall top.. It of course crumbled to dust... Anybody know what I can use to replace it? Does it see engine heat and must be special foam? Thanks..

Mine was the same way. Its not there at all right now. I was thinkinga about just using neoprene weatherstrip stuff from the hardware store.

I got to looking more closely and it is really behind the firewall so doesn't see any engine heat... So, I was thinking of going to Home Depot or Lowes and get some large (thick) high density foam... I just can't figure out why it is there in the first place... Was hoping somebody here knows... I plan to paint today and/or tomorrow and need to reassemble it by Thursday latest....
