The blend door cable on mine broke, meaning I couldn't control the temperature of the heat blowing out. So, I popped the hood and wired my blend door open at the little swivel where the cable attaches on top of the heater box. I've still got the lever that controls the function from defroster to floor vents, but the blend door is permanently open on hot.
Non-Air-Conditioning? Same thing happened to me, and I did the exact same thing.
Eventually got a replacement cable from a JY, or maybe I just bent the remaining cable end and somehow attached it to the lever, I really don't remember at this point it was so long ago....
I want to install Factory A/C when I go through my own version of The Transformation (Gary's term) but I'm not sure when that's gonna happen. No time soon, I can say that....

Yeah, non-A/C.
It works just fine like this for me, and I really don't see why Ford put the temperature blend door on the non-A/C trucks. To control the temperature, I'll either crack a vent window or turn the heater down a notch. My heater doesn't blow super hot either, so that's why I always just run it on high. Truth be told, my heater core is probably partially clogged. Either that or I'm just spoiled by all the newer vehicles I've ever been in.
He's right, the wrong way IS a lot cheaper. But sometimes the wrong way isn't always the right way.
Usually the wrong way is the wrong way, lol. I just wanted to throw it out there as an option for those who are on a budget/don't want to tear their dash apart and reassemble it.
I can still drive the truck with the defroster on all year long and quite comfortably at that. I just slide it from "hot" to "cold" as needed.
Works for me (almost 3 years running) and might work for someone else.
Yup. I have a broken hinge, just like someone pictured earlier in a YouTube post. I fabricated a hinge from a piece of vinyl cut from one of my kids school folders and sheet metal screws. It works like a charm.
You need to remove the right side vent duct work to get to the door. I was able to get mine out after removing the top dash pad and loosening the dashboard on the right side so that I could slide the vents forward off of the duct. I also discovered a sizable gap between the plenum and the defroster vent. (I will attempt to use duct tape to cover gap.)
