D44 rebuild advice

In about a month, I plan to rebuild a solid d44.
Has any of you done one of the little (as in not a Rockwell or a d60, etc) axle rebuilds.

I plan to strip it down to the housing and do an overhaul.
I need help selecting all the replacement parts and getting
it ready for my SAS in to the Bronco.

Iʻll step by step everything in my Build thread in the Bronco forum too.

i saw the title and that you replied and expected to see "the best rebuild advice is to find a 60". i'm kinda curious about this too. like cost of a good set of aftermarket axles and who makes the strongest ones, and are they worth it? i can't find 78/79 d6o fronts at anywhere near a reasonable price. so i might just beef the d44

lots of varibles for all the the questions asked.....

Yukon makes the crappiest chromo shafts - especially for the 44.
I havent kept up with the new stuff available for axles but Superior made the best shafts a couple years ago and probably still today. CTM makes the best u-joints.

^^^ this setup will cost over $1000 and still not near as strong as a stock 60.

it all depends on the use of the truck.

here are some D44 vs D60 comparisons

The reason a D44 will last in an alcohol straight line drag is because the u-joints are their strongest when the tires are 99% of the time pointed straight and there is nothing to really grab the tires and shockload the shafts. Put that same engine in a trail truck and the axle wont last 2 seconds. The rear 9" is most likely not stock. 35 and 40 spline shafts are the norm.

again, it all depends on use of the truck.

This truck has a 700ci BBF with 2 500shot NOS foggers and uses a D35 front from a Cherokee and a 40sp 9" - not to mention a Chebby 208 tcase bolted in upside down behind a powerglide.

good point, i've been thinkin about using the 79 d60 i have for my truck but like you said for straight line mud drag the extra weight is not worth it.

if you are building a mud drag only truck then use a 44 all the way.
