I found a '64 tailgate that would probably fit my '66. I used the search thread and it looks like a 64-70 are the same.. or something like that. Anyway, how do I know if it is the right one?? The one on the '64 has a latch that opens sideways. The one on my '66 opens up. I don't think mine is original though. Any help?
The guy that has it has a '64 and wants $250 for the entire truck. It's not complete as there is no engine, no hood, no grill... it does have all the doors, tailgate, bed, and fenders. Will the fenders and doors also fit my '66? Thanks a lot.
If I understand correctly.....the repops all are 64-70. However, the original tailgates have differences. I have a fair repop tailgate, and would love to find a good ORIGINAL '66 some day.
In September 1966, Ford OBSOLETED this tailgate, replaced it with the one that fit 1967 (1967/72 F100/350 = C7TZ9940700A) for use as a Service Part Replacement.
ALL the mounting hardware is the same, the styling is not the same.
The 1967/72 tailgate has smaller F O R D block letters, which are surrounded by a raised ovate scallop line.
Because of Ford's stupid change, the CORRECT 1964/66 tailgate has been hard to find for decades.
Sorry if I haven't found this answer but how do I know if its the original compared to the repop? Like I said, the one I found has a latch that opens to the side. The one I have opens upward. Will this tell me if it is original or not?
The 64 was the first year that the latch opened like that. Its written in the Ford brochure for the truck. As for later years changing it I don't know. My 64 opens with the side pull latch.
The handles and the gate as an assembly are totally interchangable 64-72. The only variances were when Ford started adding the aluminum finish panels starting in I believe 1968.
The 73-up gates all have the handle that, like the door handles lift up to open them.
That would definately not be a design from all Ive seen...sounds like a mod by some PO..the 2 bolts hold the concave trim panel which is also retained on the outside by the 4 phillips screws...this plate is what all the handle opening mechanism mounts to.
My original 64 tailgate handle opens sideways. In fact it won't close unless you pull the handle outas you shut it. I found a better 64-66 style tailgate and put it on my truck; it also has the handle that opens sideways.
