Your BBQ tank is vapor out to transfer the gas from it to your motorfuel tank you would have to turn it upside down HOWEVER new 20# cylinders have an OPD Valve (overfill protection device) that WILL NOT allow that to happen. Take it to a dealer and get it filled.

I've only ever had to use a cheater line twice, and both times I turned the bbq bottle upside down and above the main tank to fill it. Otherwise you're just balancing the pressures in the tanks and will never empty your bbq cylinder.

Edit... Didn't know about the OPD valve on the new cylinders. Been a while since I've needed to cheater fill. I'll keep my oldest bbq tank full for emergencies. To the OP, get a reliable gauge on your tank and never worry about filling your truck on the side of the road.
