Dealer only service for my Torqshift, so it only gets Motorcraft SP. I assume it will get Motorcraft LV next time.

A few more questions.

(1) Mercon LV is Group III. What is Mercon SP?

(2) In switching to LV. Is a "complete" as in all 17.5qt flush necessary?
Who has mixed LV with SP and lived to tell about it? I simply want to drain 8qt of SP and fill with 8qt of LV then change the external filter.

SideBar - How hard is it to change the external tranny filter. Did not find a DIY walkthrough. Can someone with better search skill help link me. Thanks a million.

I use Mercon SP, at least until I start hearing reports from people using the comparable fluids.

Valvoline Maxlife ATF claims SP and LV specs, and I have read of at least one dealer that uses this instead of Motorcraft fluids. My dad uses the Amsoil ATF, has had zero problems and tows HEAVY.

That's a week's worth of commuting for me!

We've been using the new Lucas Multi-Vehicle ATF which carries both LV and SP ratings for a long time now (Lucas gave it to us pre-release) in our chase trucks with no issues. I change whatever is in the pan every 10,000 miles and change the bypass filter every 20,000 miles.

I haven't got a good answer yet but ALL the newer formulations of ATF smell really foul!

I was unable to verify any real synthetic (Group IV or Group V) compatible ATF. The manufacturer's tech who I tried to contact are unsure what they are bottling. Simply sad.

So for now I will stick with Ford - Mercon LV (Group III).

My dad's been running Amsoil Fuel-Efficient ATF, which is their Low Viscosity variant, for about 4-5 years now in his '03. Shifts great and he tows HEAVY a lot, sometimes grossing over 30k. I've also heard very good things about Valvoline Maxlift Dex/Merc, which is in the same viscosity range and they list it for SP and LV applications.

I'm still running SP in mine, I bought a couple cases when they discontinued it.

I use Motorcraft Mercon SP. I do changeout the pan's 9 qt's and replace the external filter every 35k or so.

I did see from Mark the other day on a separate post that you can't pump out the TC like the 4R100 and other trannies as seen here and on You Tube without a commercial type exchanger.

I figure half at a time will keep it fresh.
