I used a 5.0 in my truck and was going to use the oringinal harness and keep it EFI but after looking at the tall pile of copper that was in the 86 country squire I decided to haul it off and buy a carb and intake. It can be done, I just cannot give you the specifics. I do know that aftermarket harnesses are more available and less exspensive than they were 7 years ago when I looked into it. Google and someone here will pipe up around, this place is full of experts and comedians.

I'm getting ready to do mine from a 95 Mustang into a 53 F100. The short-block arrived a couple of weeks ago and then I couldn't find the timing cover. I bought one off of Ebay, so I hope the get the motor back together soon. Mine came with a Ford Motor sports engine harness that I'm planning on using. I picked up an Explorer intake and injectors that I'm hoping to put on. I have the stock heads, but I want GT 40's. However, at the price they're asking for those, I'm leaning towards Edelbrock E-streets(once I scrounge up the cash-so, that may be the next hold-up). Either way, I hope to have the motor together and in the truck by mid-June and I'll be able to tell you more at that time. OBTW I used to live int CO Spgs in the 70's I went to Mitchell HS and then Doherty HS when it opened up. I always thought that I'd move back there. I loved the mountains; now I'm in the GA mountains.

i just parted out a 91 bird with a 5.0 and it has a HUGE X HUGE wiring harness . i kept it as i still fully intend to build my own harness before i give in and use the premade one . it's unbelievable the amount of wiring and connectors a modern car has in it !!!!!!!!!! tom if i'd known you were looking for a set of heads gt 40 or otherwise there was a set of i believe canfield ? or tirck flow something along those lines , as well as a set of used gt40's on the craiglist for here or bloomington a while back ..... they weren't wanting much for either set too . i think we were talking like 3-400 bucks .

Detail zone makes nice harnesses for most of the Ford products. I am tossing a 4.6 dohc cobra engine into my 53. I kept the harness I had from the engine and will be using that but detail zone will be doing my computer programming for me.

Ford Fuel Injection

All your questions will probably be answered at the above site...... It really is not as complicated an upgrade as you may think

Kevin,
You're right about that T-Bird harness. I have one from an 87 bird that came with the truck. It pretty much fills up a large box. That's pretty much how much GT-40 heads sell for around here, but by the time the machine shop gets done with them I could get the E-Street heads for a few hundred bucks more. The E-Streets are supposed to flow better and be about 50 total pounds lighter. But, I am worried about head gasket issues with the dissimilar metals. We'll see. Now about those Mel-O-Creams...

It's not difficult to make EFI work, and it's a lot easier with an aftermarket harness. It eliminates all the stuff you don't need, plus it comes with complete instructions. The hardest part is hiding all the wiring and making it look presentable, and not just a bundle of spaghetti. Sure, you'll spend a little more than a simple Edelbrock intake and carb, but there is some pretty good benefits once you're done.

I'm just looking at the manual that came with my Motorsport harnesses when I did mine. It is the Multiport EFI Engine Management Harness book with a number of ISM-12071-C302. This is pretty much a step by step on putting a 5.0 in whatever. I felt it was very easy to understand but also have a very good understanding/working knowledge of electrical. If you are electrically challenged you probably will want to find a friend that has some knowledge to help. Overall it's not very difficult and once installed any Ford mechanic should be able to plug into it for codes etc.
